Article Synopsis
  • Micronuclei (MN) are formed through various mechanisms, and their frequent presence in tumors suggests they might actively contribute to cancer progression rather than being just passive byproducts.
  • This study highlights how damages during cell division can lead to the accumulation of Emerin in MN, which lack Lamin A/C and feature the Lamin-B receptor and Sec61β.
  • Emerin mislocalization to MN is linked to a poor prognosis in prostate cancer patients and is associated with increased migratory and invasive behaviors of tumor cells, particularly in environments rich in collagen.

Background: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) have been shown to support tumor development in a variety of cancers. Different markers were applied to classify CAFs in order to elucidate their impact on tumor progression. However, the exact mechanism by which CAFs enhance cancer development and metastasis is yet unknown.

We used the topological insulator (TI) BiTeand a high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) hybrid device for investigations of proximity-induced superconductivity (PS) in the TI. Application of the superconductor YBaCuO (YBCO) enabled us to access higher temperature and energy scales for this phenomenon. The HTSC in the hybrid device exhibits emergence of a pseudogap state for T > T that converts into a superconducting state with a reduced gap for T < T.

Tumor-to-stroma ratio (TSR) is a prognostic factor that expresses the relative amounts of tumor and intratumoral stroma. In this study, its clinical and molecular relevance was evaluated in prostate cancer (PCa). The feasibility of automated quantification was tested in digital scans of tissue microarrays containing 128 primary tumors from 72 PCa patients stained immunohistochemically for epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), followed by validation in a cohort of 310 primary tumors from 209 PCa patients.

Our recent studies identified a novel pathway of nicotinamide metabolism that involves 4-pyridone-3-carboxamide-1-β-D-ribonucleoside (4PYR) and demonstrated its endothelial cytotoxic effect. This study tested the effects of 4PYR and its metabolites in experimental models of breast cancer. Mice were divided into groups: 4T1 (injected with mammary 4T1 cancer cells), 4T1 + 4PYR (4PYR-treated 4T1 mice), and control, maintained for 2 or 21 days.

Our previous work has shown that for cardiac applications, combining low-temperature plasma oxidation with an amorphous carbon coating (a-C:N:H type) constitutes a prospective solution. In this study, a short-term modification by low-temperature oxygen plasma is proposed as an example and a method for shaping the topography and surface energy of the outer amorphous carbon coating, produced via the Radio-Frequency Chemical Vapour Deposition (RFCVD) method on NiTi alloy oxidized under glow-discharge conditions. This treatment alters the chemical composition of the outer zone of the surface layer.

Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease with different molecular subtypes, which can be defined by oestrogen (ER), progesterone (PR) and human epidermal growth factor (HER2) receptors' status as luminal, HER2+ and triple negative (TNBC). Molecular subtypes also differ in their epithelial-mesenchymal phenotype, which might be related to their aggressiveness, as activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is linked with increased ability of cancer cells to survive and metastasize. Nevertheless, the reverse process of mesenchymal-epithelial transition was shown to be required to sustain metastatic colonization.

Immune system plays a dual role in cancer by either targeting or supporting neoplastic cells at various stages of disease, including metastasis. Yet, the exact immune-related transcriptome profiles of primary tumours (PT) and lymph node metastases (LNM) and their evolution during luminal breast cancer (BCa) dissemination remain undiscovered. In order to identify the immune-related transcriptome changes that accompany lymphatic spread, we analysed PT-LNM pairs of luminal BCa using NanoString technology.

The impact of europium doping on the electronic and structural properties of the topological insulator BiTe is studied in this paper. The crystallographic structure studied by electron diffraction and transmission microscopy confirms that grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system film with the Eu content of about 3% has a trigonal structure with relatively large monocrystalline grains. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicates that europium in BiTe matrix remains divalent and substitutes bismuth in a BiTe matrix.

The role of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), tumor microenvironment (TME), and the immune system in the formation of metastasis is evident, yet the details of their interactions remain unknown. This study aimed at exploring the immunotranscriptome of primary tumors associated with the status of CTCs in breast cancer (BCa) patients. The expression of 730 immune-related genes in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples was analyzed using the multigenomic NanoString technology and correlated with the presence and the phenotype of CTCs.

Vascularization influences tumor development by supporting the nutrition and dissemination of tumor cells. On the other hand, a low number of vascular vessels (VV) may induce hypoxia, accounting for selection of resistant clone(s) of tumor cells. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of vascular (VV) and lymphatic vessels (LV) in prostate cancer (PCa).

The amplification of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) encoded by the gene has been described as having a prognostic role in breast cancer patients. However, increased dosage of the gene (tested by real-time PCR) is also observed in ER-negative breast cancers, which might suggest the expression of alternative isoforms of ERα (other than classical ERα of 66 kDa). In the current work, we have investigated the gene dosage in 402 primary breast cancer patients as well as the expression of ERα isoforms-ERα66 and ERα36-on mRNA and protein levels.

The classical stoichiometric oxidation of alcohols is an important tool in contemporary organic chemistry. However, it still requires huge modifications in order to comply with the principles of green chemistry. The use of toxic chemicals, hazardous organic solvents, and the large amounts of toxic wastes that result from the reactions are a few examples of the problems that must be solved.

Epitaxial thin films of Fe doped SrTiO have been studied by the use of resonant photoemission. This technique allowed us to identify contributions of the Fe and Ti originating electronic states to the valence band. Two valence states of iron Fe and Fe, detected on the base of x-ray absorption studies spectra, appeared to form quite different contributions to the valence band of SrTiO.

Intratumoral heterogeneity of breast cancer remains a major challenge in successful treatment. Failure of cancer therapies can also be accredited to inability to systemically eradicate cancer stem cells (CSCs). Recent evidence points to the role of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in expanding the pool of tumor cells with CSCs features.

Heralded as one of the key elements for next generation spintronics devices, topological insulators (TIs) are now step by step envisioned as nanodevices like charge-to-spin current conversion or as Dirac fermions based nanometer Schottky diode for example. However, reduced to few nanometers, TIs layers exhibit a profound modification of the electronic structure and the consequence of this quantum size effect on the fundamental carriers and phonons ultrafast dynamics has been poorly investigated so far. Here, thanks to a complete study of a set of high quality molecular beam epitaxy grown nanolayers, we report the existence of a critical thickness of around ~6 nm, below which a spectacular reduction of the carrier relaxation time by a factor of ten is found in comparison to bulk Bi Te In addition, we also evidence an A1g optical phonon mode softening together with the appearance of a thickness dependence of the photoinduced coherent acoustic phonons signals.
