We report the synthesis and characterization of new, self-assembling molecular capsules. The modular strategy makes use of glycoluril building blocks available in multigram amounts combined with aromatic spacer elements. The lengthy syntheses encountered with earlier generations of capsules are avoided, and several capsules of nanometer dimensions are now accessible.

We have attempted to develop a dominant negative isoform by targeting several mutations of VR1 at highly conserved amino acids or at residues of potential functional importance and expressing the mutants in Chinese hamster ovary cells. Mutation of three highly conserved amino acid residues in the putative sixth transmembrane domain disrupts activation of the VR1 receptor by both capsaicin and resiniferatoxin.

Cord blood and blood samples at 47+/-6 postnatal hours were taken from 10 healthy neonates and their antioxidant capacity was determined using Randox Antioxidant kits and the heme-specific antioxidant activity (HSAA). Randox indicates the chain-breaking antioxidant capacity; HSAA corresponds to the ability to limit lipid peroxidation.

Background: Chemokines play an important role in the pathophysiology of asthma and allergy. Recently, polymorphisms in the gene regulatory region of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) and in the promoter region of RANTES have been found; these polymorphisms increase the expression of the chemokines.
Objective: We investigated whether the presence of the polymorphisms was associated with atopy or asthma and whether these alleles influenced the severity of asthma in affected individuals.
The central role of chemokines in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has been made clear. Recently polymorphisms in the gene regulatory region of MCP-1 and in the promoter region of RANTES have been found, which increase the expression of these chemokines. We investigated the role of these polymorphisms together with the chemokine SDF-1-801A and the chemokine receptors CCR2-64I and CCR5Delta32 mutations in 318 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) referred to coronary bypass surgery, comparing them with 320 healthy controls.

Building on our previous strategies which have generated potent agonists for VR1, we now describe a series of novel N-(3-acyloxy-2-benzylpropyl)-N'-dihydroxytetrahydrobenzazepine and tetrahydroisoquinoline thiourea analogues, several of which are potent VR1 antagonists. We report here the rationale for the design, the synthesis, and the in vitro characterization of activity in assays for [(3)H]resiniferatoxin binding and (45)Ca influx using heterologously expressed rat VR1.

Methods: A total of 30 transplanted children and adolescents were investigated for total homocysteine and folate serum concentrations before and after folate treatment, as well as for the presence of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism.
Results: The allele frequency of C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene in the study population (0.
Secondary sexual characteristics such as softening and rounding of the abdomen as well as reddening and protrusion of the anal papilla and vent can be of help to breeders in selecting common carp (Cyprinus carpio) females prepared for propagation. To assess the reliability of this method, long-term data obtained on induced spawning of common carp at a large-scale fish hatchery were evaluated. The average spawning ratio of 2,620 females receiving hormonal injections was 79.

In the present study, we have analyzed the oligomeric state of VR1. Co-immunoprecipitation of differently tagged VR1 molecules indicated that VR1 can form oligomers.

Although the exact mechanism(s) for WAD causation have not been established, several have been proposed and it is likely the mechanism(s) are associated with the kinematics of the head relative to the torso. It follows that automotive seat designs that address reductions in certain head-torso kinematics may lead to a reduction in WAD potential.

The pathogenesis of postoperative atrial fibrillation is likely to be multifactorial, however increased sympathetic activation may play a significant role. The aim of the study was to detect the incidence and possible reasons of atrial fibrillation in the first three postoperative days after open-heart surgery.

VR1 was C-terminally tagged with either the 27-kDa enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) or a 12-amino acid epsilon-epitope. Upon exposure to resiniferatoxin, VR1eGFP- or VR1epsilon-expressing cells exhibited pharmacological responses similar to those of cells expressing the untagged VR1.

The aim of our work was to develop a method to determine the the H+/K+-ATPase activity of human gastric biopsy samples. Our method is based on the phosphatase activity and the K+-inducible property of the enzyme. K+-inducible pNPPase activity was determined from homogenated corpus and antrum biopsy samples.

A model based on a time-domain statement of causality is presented that describes observed power-law behavior of many viscoelastic materials. A Hooke's law is derived from power-law loss characteristics; it reduces to the Hooke's law for the Voigt model for the specific case of quadratic frequency loss.
