It is not understood how cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, specifically the representation of sex in CPR manikins, contributes to inequitable outcomes in cardiac arrest survival. The aim of this study was to identify the sex and chest wall secondary sexual characteristics of CPR manikins on the global market. The secondary aim was to identify if manikin manufacturing companies had a publicly available sustainability policy or equivalent, and if these covered products were manufactured.

Potential Teratogenicity Effects of Metals on Avian Embryos.

Agricultural areas can provide sources of food and hiding and nesting places for wild birds. Thus, the chemical load of potentially toxic elements (Cd, Cu, Pb) due to industrial and agricultural activities can affect not only the adult birds but also the embryos developing in the egg. The toxic effects of heavy metals applied alone were investigated on chicken embryos in the early and late stages of embryonic development using injection and immersion treatment methods.

Effect of aflatoxin B1 and sterigmatocystin on DNA repair genes in common carp.

The present study aimed to investigate the short-time (24 h) effect of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and sterigmatocystin (STC) on the expression of hsp70, p53, gadd45, and ogg1 genes in common carp hepatopancreas. Our results showed that aflatoxin B1 and sterigmatocystin can stimulate the expression of DNA repair genes, mainly by hour 24. This significant finding contributes to our understanding of the short-term effects of these mycotoxins on ogg1 genes in common carp hepatopancreas.

Epigenetic and Molecular Alterations in Obesity: Linking CRP and DNA Methylation to Systemic Inflammation.

Obesity is marked by excessive fat accumulation in the adipose tissue, which disrupts metabolic processes and causes chronic systemic inflammation. Commonly, body mass index (BMI) is used to assess obesity-related risks, predicting potential metabolic disorders. However, for a better clustering of obese patients, we must consider molecular and epigenetic changes which may be responsible for inflammation and metabolic changes.

Relevance of Proteinuria in Kidney Transplant Recipients and Allograft Outcomes.

Background: The onset of proteinuria in renal allograft recipients is frequently associated with an increased risk for both graft failure and mortality. We investigated the risk associated with post-transplant proteinuria and its time-dynamics in a select group treated for biopsy proven antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR).

Taylor-Aris Dispersion-Assisted Mass Spectrometry for the Analysis of Native Proteins.

As has recently been shown, Taylor-Aris dispersion-assisted mass spectrometry (TADA-MS) can offer direct injection MS determinations in fields where the targets of the analyses are large molecules present in a matrix that would otherwise cause serious interferences. In the present study, we demonstrated the exceptional utility of TADA-MS in native protein analysis: (i) a dramatic improvement in detection sensitivity was found due to its ability to strongly reduce matrix interferences, (ii) more "native-like" conditions can be used during analyses, (iii) the direct injection of non-MS-compatible matrices is allowed into MS, and (iv) a considerable simplification and economization of the workflow is ensured. We investigated the behavior of different types of proteins and protein complexes present under native conditions, demonstrating the unambiguous benefits and simplicity of the method.

Effect of Lighting Methods on the Production, Behavior and Meat Quality Parameters of Broiler Chickens.

Many farms have been replacing traditional lighting sources with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs because of technological modernization. We aimed to investigate the effects of incandescent lighting (IL) and LED lighting on Cobb 500 broiler chickens for six weeks. Production parameters (body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio), calculated slaughter values (yield%, relative breast%, thigh%) and breast meat quality parameters (pH at 45 min and 24 h postmortem, color, drip loss, kitchen equipment losses, shear force, meat composition) were recorded.

This study aims to describe the perception of need for same-sex and same-race mentorship and role models at evolving stages of a medical career and to explore whether these differences affect career choices within the field of medicine. A total of 326 medical students, 309 resident physicians, and 200 faculty attending physicians at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine completed an online survey focused on their perceived value of same-sex and same-race mentorship throughout their stages of medical training and practice. The top three factors influencing specialty choice were lifestyle, time commitment, and supportive department.

This interview-based study explored leaders' experiences of normalising a simulation-based education programme in a teaching hospital. Fourteen known simulation leaders across Australia and North America were interviewed.

Current trends in the prevention of adhesions after zone 2 flexor tendon repair.

Treating flexor tendon injuries within the digital flexor sheath (commonly referred to as palmar hand zone 2) presents both technical and logistical challenges. Success hinges on striking a delicate balance between safeguarding the surgical repair for tendon healing and initiating early rehabilitation to mitigate the formation of tendon adhesions. Adhesions between tendon slips and between tendons and the flexor sheath impede tendon movement, leading to postoperative stiffness and functional impairment.

Tumour-derived sialoglycans, bearing the charged nonulosonic sugar sialic acid at their termini, play a critical role in tumour cell adhesion and invasion, as well as evading cell death and immune surveillance. Sialyltransferases (ST), the enzymes responsible for the biosynthesis of sialylated glycans, are highly upregulated in cancer, with tumour hypersialylation strongly correlated with tumour growth, metastasis and drug resistance. As a result, desialylation of the tumour cell surface using either targeted delivery of a pan-ST inhibitor (or sialidase) or systemic delivery of a non-toxic selective ST inhibitors are being pursued as potential new anti-metastatic strategies against multiple cancers including pancreatic, ovarian, breast, melanoma and lung cancer.
