Article Synopsis
  • New serum markers, beta-D-glucan and KL-6, were evaluated to determine their effectiveness in diagnosing Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) in patients with and without HIV infection.
  • The study, which analyzed the medical records of 35 patients, found that both markers had higher detection rates in patients with HIV compared to those without (100% vs. 88% for beta-D-glucan and 88% vs. 66% for KL-6).
  • While beta-D-glucan proved to be a reliable diagnostic tool for PCP, neither marker was linked to the overall outcomes of the patients.
