Domestic cats were derived from the Near Eastern wildcat (Felis lybica), after which they dispersed with people into Europe. As they did so, it is possible that they interbred with the indigenous population of European wildcats (Felis silvestris). Gene flow between incoming domestic animals and closely related indigenous wild species has been previously demonstrated in other taxa, including pigs, sheep, goats, bees, chickens, and cattle.

The history of the British Isles and Ireland is characterized by multiple periods of major cultural change, including the influential transformation after the end of Roman rule, which precipitated shifts in language, settlement patterns and material culture. The extent to which migration from continental Europe mediated these transitions is a matter of long-standing debate. Here we study genome-wide ancient DNA from 460 medieval northwestern Europeans-including 278 individuals from England-alongside archaeological data, to infer contemporary population dynamics.

The colonization of Eurasia by early humans is a key event after their spread out of Africa, but the nature, timing and ecological context of the earliest human occupation of northwest Europe is uncertain and has been the subject of intense debate. The southern Caucasus was occupied about 1.8 million years (Myr) ago, whereas human remains from Atapuerca-TD6, Spain (more than 780 kyr ago) and Ceprano, Italy (about 800 kyr ago) show that early Homo had dispersed to the Mediterranean hinterland before the Brunhes-Matuyama magnetic polarity reversal (780 kyr ago).

Eucapnic breathing and ventilatory responses to hypercapnia were studied in seven cats during sleep and wakefulness. No significant differences were found in minute ventilation (VE), alveolar ventilation (VA), or alveolar PCO2 (PACO2) between wakefulness (W) and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep, but VA and VE were less during rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep than W, and PACO2 declined during REM compared with NREM. To test the hypercapnic response, cats were required to rebreathe from a bag containing 6% CO2 and 94% O2 (to eliminate the hypoxic response).
