Background: Emergency department (ED) use in Quebec may be measured from varied sources, eg, patient's self-reports, hospital medical charts, and provincial health insurance claims databases. Determining the relative validity of each source is complicated because none is a gold standard.
Objective: We sought to compare the validity of different measures of ED use without arbitrarily assuming one is perfect.
Objectives: To conduct a systematic review of the literature on the determinants of hospital emergency department (ED) visits by elders, using a modification of the Andersen behavioral model of health services, adapted to explain ED utilization.
Methods: Relevant articles were identified through MEDLINE and a search of reference lists and personal files. Studies of populations aged 65 or older in which ED visits were a study outcome were included if they were: original, not restricted to a particular medical condition, written in English or French, and investigated one or more determinants.
Study Objectives: We evaluate the effect of a multifaceted intervention to decrease emergency department crowding on the incidence of return visits to the ED or a hospital ward. The intervention included increased emergency physician coverage, the designation of physician coordinators, and new hospital policies regarding laboratory, consultation, and admission procedures.
Methods: The incidence of return visits within 7 days of discharge was estimated in samples from 2 populations (ie, patients discharged from the ED and patients discharged from the hospital) and during a 12-month period before and a 12-month period after the implementation of the intervention.
