Objective: To assess the prevalence and clinical significance of small-vessel vasculitis (SVV) surrounding an uninflamed temporal artery (TA) in patients diagnosed as having giant cell (temporal) arteritis (GCA) and/or polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).

Methods: Patients with GCA and/or PMR (n = 490) were included in this multicenter prospective study. Slides of TA biopsy specimens were reviewed by 2 pathologists who were blinded with regard to clinical information.

Article Synopsis
  • The causes of giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are still unclear, but certain risk factors like the HLA-DR4 group and existing vascular diseases have been identified.
  • The incidence of these conditions can differ by country, and while a North-South variation exists, caution is advised due to potential biases in how cases are detected and reported.
  • Research has explored various infectious agents as possible triggers for GCA/PMR, but while some viruses were investigated, most have been ruled out; recent focus has been on viruses like parainfluenza virus, Parvovirus B19, and bacteria such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, suggesting an immune response may be

Background: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) oral excretions are common after bone marrow transplantation (BMT).

Objective: We report a 4-year systematic survey of HSV excretions in an adult population who underwent BMT (289 transplantations).

Study Design: Patients received either intravenous ACV treatment when mucositis occurred or systematic intravenous ACV prophylaxis from initiation of the BMT conditioning until the end of aplasia.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) develops in 0.5-5% of organ transplant patients; it usually regresses upon treatment reduction, but this may result in graft loss necessitating return to dialysis and/or retransplantation. Until now posttransplantation KS is considered to recur upon reintroduction of immunosuppressive treatment, a fact that has limited retransplantation of patients with previous KS.
