Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) containing carboxymethyllysine (CML) modifications are generally thought to be ligands of the receptor for AGEs, RAGEs. It has been argued that this results in the activation of pro-inflammatory pathways and diseases. However, it has not been shown conclusively that a CML-modified protein can interact directly with RAGE.

Article Synopsis
  • Ochratoxin A (OTA) is linked to kidney cancer in rodents, but its impact on human health is uncertain, potentially depending on how it causes cancer.
  • A study showed that OTA reduces the expression of genes regulated by Nrf2, which plays a key role in detoxification and antioxidant defense, particularly in the kidneys of rats.
  • The inhibition of Nrf2 by OTA leads to oxidative DNA damage, suggesting that the reduced cellular defense against oxidative stress could be a way through which OTA causes kidney toxicity and cancer.
