Symptoms and treatment of mental illness among prisoners: a study of Michigan state prisons.

This study reports on a representative sample of prisoners in Michigan correctional facilities to determine the prevalence of psychiatric illness and the delivery of mental health (MH) services. Mental health assessments were conducted with 618 incarcerated subjects using the interRAI Correctional Facilities (interRAI CF). Subjects were randomly sampled based on four strata: males in the general population, males in administrative segregation, males in special units, and females.

Dental caries and dietary patterns in low-income African American children.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between dietary patterns and dental caries severity in low-income African American children.

Methods: The participants were 3- to 5-year-old African American children in Detroit, Mich, with household incomes below 250% of the 2000 federal poverty level (N=436). Dietary intakes were obtained using the Block Kids Food Questionnaire.

Neonatal back transport: perspectives from parents of Medicaid-insured infants and providers.

Purpose: To examine parents' and health care providers' perceptions of back transport from a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit to a community hospital.

Design: Qualitative, hypothesis-generating, cross-sectional study utilizing focus group methodology.

Sample: Participants included 12 parents of back-transported infants insured by Medicaid, 6 regional NICU health care providers, and 17 community hospital special care nursery health care providers.

Asthma educational seminar targeting Medicaid providers.

Background: Medicaid-insured children have high risk of asthma but are less likely to receive care in keeping with national guidelines. We targeted providers who care for a large proportion of Medicaid-insured children and presented a 2-session multimedia asthma-education seminar that emphasizes communication and teaching techniques, to enhance providers' asthma-care teaching skills.

Methods: Five Medicaid-approved health maintenance organizations recruited pediatric primary-care providers.

Back transport of neonates: effect on hospital length of stay.

Introduction: In a regionalized perinatal system, recovering neonates may be back transported from a regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to community hospitals closer to their residence to convalesce prior to hospital discharge.

Objective: This study evaluates the practice of neonatal back transport for growth and the duration of total hospitalization.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study comparing length of stay (LOS) for infants back transported from a regional NICU to a level II nursery for convalescent care (BT), with LOS for infants eligible for back transport discharged home from the Regional Center (RC).

Barriers to screening infants for retinopathy of prematurity after discharge or transfer from a neonatal intensive care unit.

Objective: To assess neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) practices affecting screening and follow-up for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

Methods: Retrospective study of infants at risk for ROP, eligible for back transport, admitted to a regional NICU from January 1, 1999 until May 31, 2002. Patients failed to receive needed follow-up for ROP after discharge or transfer from a NICU, if we could not verify their ROP screening follow-up within 1 month.

Improving physician attendance at educational seminars sponsored by Managed Care Organizations.

Purpose: To enhance primary care provider participation in a multi-faceted interactive asthma teaching program sponsored by managed care organizations.

Design: Case series of six MCO-sponsored continuing medical education (CME) sessions.

Methodology: MCOs were provided with a standard set of recruitment materials.
