Background And Purpose: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are non-medical factors that may contribute to the development of diseases, with a higher representation in underserved populations. Our objective is to determine the association of unfavorable SDOH with self-reported stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) and vascular risk factors (VRFs) among Hispanic/Latino adults living in the US.

Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

Although prediagnostic circulating concentrations of the immune activation markers soluble CD27 (sCD27), sCD30 and chemokine ligand-13 (CXCL13) have been associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk, studies have been limited by sample size in associations with NHL subtypes. We pooled data from eight nested case-control studies to investigate subtype-specific relationships for these analytes. Using polytomous regression, we calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) relating study-specific analyte tertiles to selected subtypes vs controls (n = 3310): chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL; n = 623), diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL; n = 621), follicular lymphoma (FL; n = 398), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL; n = 138), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL; n = 82) and T cell lymphoma (TCL; n = 92).

Purpose: The current study examined the effects of chronic stress and a genetic risk score on the presence of hypertension and elevated systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure among Hispanics/Latinos in the target population of Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

Materials And Methods: Of the participants ( = 11,623) assessed during two clinic visits (Visit 1 2008-2013 & Visit 2 2014-2018), we analysed data from 7,429 adults (50.4% female), aged 18-74, who were genotyped and responded to chronic stress questionnaires.

Background: High sodium and low potassium consumption are risk factors for hypertension. The objectives of this study were to describe usual daily intake of sodium and potassium among US Hispanics/Latinos of diverse background groups and estimate the proportion meeting guidelines for dietary sodium and potassium intake.

Methods: We studied 16,171 participants of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), a diverse group of self-identified Hispanics/Latinos aged 18-74 years from 4 US communities.

The study assessed whether overall perceived ethnic discrimination and four unique discrimination types were associated with binge drinking in participants from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos who also completed the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study (n = 5,313). In unadjusted analyses that were weighted for sampling strategy and design, each unit increase in discrimination type was associated with a 12-63% increase in odds of binge drinking; however, after adjusting for important demographic variables including age, sex, heritage group, language, and duration of U.S.

The relationship between neuropathology and clinically manifested functional and cognitive deficits is complex. Clinical observations of individuals with greater neuropathology who function better than some individuals with less neuropathology are common and puzzling. Educational attainment, a proxy for "cognitive reserve," may help to explain this apparent contradiction.

The aim of this study was to determine the magnitude and significance of the associations among coronary artery calcium (CAC) and systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, and mean arterial pressure. Women 50 to 59 years of age at baseline in the Women's Health Initiative clinical trial of conjugated equine estrogen underwent computed tomography scanning of the chest after the end of the trial. Blood pressures were measured twice with the participant in the seated position using a conventional mercury sphygmomanometer.

Objective: We hypothesized that a cardiologist-initiated motivational discussion during a routine general cardiology clinic visit that included an exercise 'contract' signed by the patient, physician and a witness, would increase self-reported days per week of exercise.

Methods: A short-term pilot intervention was provided to forty consecutive general cardiology clinic patients who were enrolled in 2005. They were asked to answer the question "How many days each week do you exercise" prior to the motivational discussion and at routine follow-up.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for adults in developed countries. Many risk factors responsible for the development of cardiovascular disease are associated with behavior. We studied whether encouraging patients to be accountable for their own lifestyle choices would lead to improvements in subjective and objective health measures in 26 consecutive general cardiology clinic patients.

The association of hysterectomy with increased coronary risk is controversial, and previous studies have reached differing conclusions as to whether the excess risk is confined to women who have also undergone bilateral oophorectomy. This analysis uses the Framingham algorithm to evaluate the hypothesis that hysterectomy with or without ovarian preservation is associated with increased coronary risk, using a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 1,501 participants of the Women's Health Initiative. Framingham risk scores, derived from the algorithm in the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines, which include age, smoking, systolic blood pressure, total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, were determined in a subgroup of Women's Health Initiative participants with measured plasma lipids and known ovariectomy status.
