- The study analyzed the presence of hydrophilic biocides in aquatic environments and assessed how effectively they are removed during conventional wastewater treatment using a mass flux analysis.
- A fully automated method combining solid phase extraction with LC-ESI-MS/MS was validated to simultaneously measure various biocidal compounds and certain pharmaceuticals in wastewater and surface water.
- Results showed that mecoprop had the highest average concentration in tertiary effluent, comparable to pharmaceuticals like diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole, with overall compound removal often below 50%, especially during rain events which increased biocide runoff into surface waters.
