Refractory angina pectoris (RAP) is a clinical problem, frequently encountered in the elderly, associated with high health-care costs. Until recently, the goal of RAP treatment aimed at improving the quality of life (QoL) because it was thought that mortality rates were not different between stable angina pectoris and RAP. Since cardiac cachexia could be associated with alterations in muscular mitochondrial metabolism, we hypothesized that the expected alterations in the activities of mitochondrial oxidative enzymes could be associated with changes in mitochondrial protein synthesis in oxidative skeletal muscles. Cardiac cachexia was provoked in male rats by the ligation of the left coronary artery. Six cachectic and 6 control rats were age-paired, and their food intake was observed.

Objective: To describe the efficacy and patient acceptance of non-invasive ventilation for pulmonary edema associated with administration of tocolytic drugs during labour of a twin pregnancy.

Clinical Features: We report the case of a 31-yr-old parturient at 34 weeks gestation of a twin pregnancy, who experienced acute pulmonary edema after tocolytic treatment with nifedipine, nicardipine and atosiban of > 48 hr in duration. This patient presented with hypoxia during labour and non-invasive ventilation was successfully used allowing delivery by vaginal approach, with patient-controlled epidural analgesia, of two twins with a five minute Apgar score of 8.

The benefits of skeletal myoblast transplantation are limited by the high rate of early cell death which is partly of ischemic origin. We, therefore, assessed whether graft survival could be improved by the additional use of the angiogenic cytokine erythropoietin (EPO). Thirty-five Lewis rats underwent coronary artery ligation and, two weeks later, were randomized to receive in-scar injections of control medium, skeletal myoblasts (5x10(6)) or skeletal myoblasts with EPO started the day before transplantation and continued for two weeks (500 U/kg three times a week).
