  • Human schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma worms, is a neglected tropical disease prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, currently lacking a vaccine despite ongoing development.
  • The study improves a compartmental model of schistosomiasis by adding human behavior and voluntary vaccination factors, highlighting that effective herd immunity requires specific vaccination rates.
  • Results show that unless vaccination costs are low, voluntary vaccination alone may not sufficiently lower disease prevalence below 1%, emphasizing the need for affordable vaccine access to achieve public health goals.

Macrophages are present in all vertebrates as part of the innate immune system, which protects from pathogens and scavenges sterol rich, cellular debris and modified lipoproteins. Thus, resident macrophages are prone to excessive levels of intracellular cholesterol esters. Intramacrophage cholesterol esters can efflux via cell surface transporters, ABCA1 and ABCG1, to lipoprotein carriers such as apo-AI and HDL.

Hydroxamic acids represent a group of weak organic acids, both naturally occurring and synthetically derived, characterized by the general formula RC(= O)N(R'OH). In this study, we investigated the binding behavior of N-m-tolyl-4-chlorophenoxyaceto hydroxamic acid with calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) and torula yeast RNA (t-RNA) through a combination of techniques including UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence emission analysis, viscometry, and computational simulations using AutoDock4 software. Our findings reveal that the mode of binding between the compound and the nucleic acids is consistent with intercalation.

The interaction between murine double minute 2 (MDM2) and p53, marked by transcriptional induction and feedback inhibition, orchestrates a functional loop dictating cellular fate. The functional loop comprising p53-MDM2 axis is made up of an interactome consisting of approximately 81 proteins, which are spatio-temporally regulated and involved in DNA repair mechanisms. Biochemical and genetic alterations of the interactome result in dysregulation of the p53-mdm2 axis that leads to gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.
