The Role of Problem-Based Learning in Preparing Medical Students to Work As Community Service-Oriented Primary Care Physicians: A Systematic Literature Review.

The number of primary care physicians in the United States is dwindling rapidly, and osteopathic medical schools are embracing the challenge of leading students toward a career in primary care to meet this need. In recent years, the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum in medical education has emerged as a patient-centered, social-justice-focused methodology. The unique format of PBL centered around patient cases allows learning through community-based medicine, promoting medical graduates' entry into primary care.

Perceiving Freedom: Civil Liberties and COVID-19 Vaccinations.

Why have some countries been more successful in their COVID-19 vaccine rollouts than others? Despite efforts by governments to vaccinate their adult populations against COVID-19, vaccination rates remain irregularly low in some countries. We suggest that a crucial piece of this puzzle lies in resistance against government directives from the public due to civil liberty protections. Countries with greater protections for civil liberties can be expected to have lower vaccinations administered than countries with fewer protections, as the public enjoys a sense of freedom regarding their private lives.

Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome: Need for Diagnosis and Treatment.

With the continued surge in Lyme disease cases, post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) is becoming a more pressing health concern. The aim of this review is to identify comprehensive treatment strategies for PTLDS patients. Unfortunately, universal guidelines for diagnosing and treating PTLDS do not currently exist.

A New Skin Manifestation at the Site of a Previously Healed Dermatosis: A Case of Wolf's Isotopic Response.

Wolf's isotopic response (WIR) is an uncommon phenomenon that refers to the occurrence of a new skin condition at the location of a previously healed dermatosis. We describe an unusual manifestation of bacterial furunculosis which arose as an isotopic response following a herpes zoster episode. The initial skin disease in most cases is herpes zoster and the isotopic response is a granulomatous reaction.

Frequency and determinants of intracranial atherosclerotic stroke in urban Pakistan.

Background: Intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAD) is a frequent underlying mechanism of ischemic stroke. There is little direct evidence on its frequency and determinants from regions of high prevalence. This study explores the conventional and socioeconomic risk factors of ICAD in a South Asian population.

Carvedilol vs. esophageal variceal band ligation in the primary prophylaxis of variceal hemorrhage: a multicentre randomized controlled trial.

Background & Aims: Esophageal variceal bleed is a major problem in patients with cirrhosis. Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) has been shown to be equal to or better than propranolol in preventing first bleed. Carvedilol is a non-selective β blocker with alpha-1 adrenergic blocker activity.

Hepatic vein waveform in liver cirrhosis: correlation with child's class and size of varices.

Objective: To determine the correlation of hepatic venous waveform changes with severity of hepatic dysfunction and grading of oesophageal varices.

Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, Medical Unit-III, Ward-7 from January 2009 to December 2009. Cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension were included in study.

Corelation of serum alpha fetoprotein and tumor size in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Objective: To determine the correlation of elevated serum Alpha feto-protein with tumour size in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was done at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi, Medical Unit-III, Ward-7 from January 2009 to June 2010. Patients enrolled in study were known cases of chronic liver disease and were complicated by development of hepatocellular carcinoma; those having metastasis in liver from any where were excluded.
