  • Infective endocarditis (IE) is on the rise globally, with a focus on healthcare-associated (HAIE) and drug-use-associated (DUA-IE) infections and difficulties in treating prosthetic valve infections.
  • Recent findings show that Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of IE, alongside the challenges posed by drug-resistant organisms and advances in diagnostics that help identify hard-to-detect cases.
  • Effective treatment relies on prompt diagnosis through advanced imaging, appropriate antibiotics, and coordinated care from multiple specialties, including early surgical intervention for improved patient outcomes.*

Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is a fatal complication that occurs in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals following blood transfusion. It is characterised by donor lymphocyte attacks on recipient tissues. We present a case of TA-GVHD in an immunocompetent man in his 70s who developed fever, diarrhoea, rash and pancytopenia after non-irradiated blood transfusion from an unrelated donor.

Pine wilt disease (PWD), caused by the nematode , is a highly destructive forest disease that necessitates rapid and precise identification for effective management and control. This study evaluates various detection methods for PWD, including morphological diagnosis, molecular techniques, and remote sensing. While traditional methods are economical, they are limited by their inability to detect subtle or early changes and require considerable time and expertise.

  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor prognosis, and this research identifies key hub genes that could serve as prognostic biomarkers for TNBC therapy by analyzing gene expression data from multiple datasets.
  • The study utilized tools like the STRING database for protein-protein interaction analysis and Cytoscape for identifying the most crucial genes, leading to the identification of seven hub genes and four significantly enriched proteasome-related genes.
  • The analysis found that these hub genes were up-regulated in TNBC patients and showed correlations with factors like tumor purity and survival rates, suggesting their potential in improving diagnosis and treatment of TNBC.

Here a ligand exchange strategy for synthesizing sol-gel oxides is demonstrated to achieve multifunctionality including direct photolithography, high dielectric strength, and high charge carrier mobility, which is challenging to obtain in such oxides. For this purpose, a series of bidentate ligands with azide termini and ethylene-glycol bridges is synthesized, and these ligands are universally applicable to the synthesis of a variety of dielectric and semiconductor oxides. Optimized photolithography conditions yield a high-quality ZrO dielectric film with a high dielectric constant and strength of ≈18 and ≈7 MV cm, respectively.

The accurate detection and monitoring of supraglacial lakes in high mountainous regions are crucial for understanding their dynamic nature and implications for environmental management and sustainable development goals. In this study, we propose a novel approach that integrates multisource data and machine learning techniques for supra-glacial lake detection in the Passu Batura glacier of the Hunza Basin, Pakistan. We extract pertinent features or parameters by leveraging multisource datasets such as radar backscatter intensity VH and VV parameters from Sentinel-1 Ground Range Detected (GRD) data, near-infrared (NIR), NDWI_green, NDWI_blue parameters from Sentinel-2 Multi-spectral Instrument (MSI) data, and surface slope, aspect, and elevation parameters from topographic data.

Expression of the nonclassical human leukocyte antigen () gene is upregulated in placenta during pregnancy. In other cells, HLA-G is upregulated during parasitic infections and allergic reactions. Polymorphism at the gene locus has been reported for many populations, but so far not for any ethnic groups in Malaysia.

There have been numerous advancements in the strategies used for treating mandibular fractures in the present times, while open reduction and internal fixation is still accepted as the most preferred treatment option for such fractures despite numerous drawbacks. The aim of the present prospective, randomized controlled study was to evaluate the clinical outcome including neurosensory deficit and pain score variables in mandibular fractures that were treated using rigid internal fixation with three-dimensional (3D) miniplate internal fixation.  For the present study, a total of 20 patients of either sex in an age range of 18 to 55 years with simultaneous angle and contralateral body/parasymphysis fractures of the mandible were included, while the clinical outcome was compared in relation to the two groups wherein different treatment options were used including using rigid internal fixation in one as against 3D miniplate internal fixation in the other.

Protein malnutrition is a major public health concern in the developing world. The livestock products are a good source of high-quality protein, but the livestock industry is a source of pollution and one of the leading causes of climate change because the slaughtering of animals results in the accumulation of waste, offals, and several inedible body portions. The rapid increase in the human population and inadequate supply of traditional protein sources have driven a search for novel and alternative protein sources such as edible insects.
