Green Synthesis of Fluorescent Carbon Quantum Dots from Leaves and Their Peroxidase-Mimetic Activity for the Detection of HO and Ascorbic Acid in Common Fresh Fruits.

In the present study, an ecofriendly and zero-cost approach has been demonstrated for the preparation of carbon quantum dots by one-pot hydrothermal treatment of leaf extracts of neem (). The as-synthesized neem carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) exhibited high fluorescent quantum yields (QYs) up to 27.2%.

eIF5A inhibition influences T cell dynamics in the pancreatic microenvironment of the humanized mouse model of Type 1 Diabetes.

We have developed a transgenic mouse model of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in which human GAD65 is expressed in pancreatic β-cells, and human MHC-II is expressed on antigen presenting cells. Induced GAD65 antigen presentation activates T-cells, which initiates the downstream events leading to diabetes. In our humanized mice, we have shown downregulation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5 A (elF5A), expressed only in actively dividing mammalian cells.

Mustard seeds derived fluorescent carbon quantum dots and their peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection of HO and ascorbic acid in a real sample.

Herein, we were synthesized fluorescent carbon quantum dots via facile one-step hydrothermal treatment of mustard seeds (M-CQDs). It showed excellent optical property with fluorescent quantum yield 4.6%.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to apply the Brief International Classification of Functioning (ICF) Core Set for Hand Conditions to the physical therapy outcome measures, and to evaluate the contribution of these measures to overall health in subjects with ulnar wrist pain.

Methods: Thirty-five subjects with ulnar wrist pain received a 4-week home-based treatment program including orthotics and strengthening exercises. Investigators measured pain, function, grip strength, and overall health four weeks post-intervention.

Background: Thyroid cancer and thyroid autoimmunity are considered opposite extremes of immune-responses. However, several studies have suggested that thyroid cancer coexists with autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto Thyroiditis (HT) and Graves disease (GD). We have shown that the risk of developing thyroid cancer is higher in patients with a silent form of autoimmune thyroid disease -Euthyroid Hashimoto Thyroiditis-(EHT).

Management of symptomatic os acromiale: a survey of the American shoulder and elbow surgeons.

Background: The purpose of this paper was to survey members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) to assess their opinion on management options, help highlight important clinical factors, and elucidate surgical preferences for the treatment of a symptomatic meso-os.

Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed to the active members of the ASES. The survey queried surgeon demographics and perioperative management preferences, and presented multiple clinical case scenarios of patients with a presumed symptomatic, unstable os acromiale.

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in ETS1 are associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Ets1 mice develop SLE-like symptoms, suggesting that dysregulation of this transcription factor is important to the onset or progression of SLE. We used conditional deletion approaches to examine the impact of Ets1 expression in different immune cell types.

Pharmaceutical Policy Reforms to Regulate Drug Prices in the Asia Pacific Region: The Case of Australia, China, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and South Korea.

Medicine price directly affects affordability and access to medicines particularly in countries where a major portion of pharmaceutical spending is through out-of-pocket payment, such as in the Asia Pacific region. We have undertaken a detailed appraisal of the pharmaceutical policy reforms to regulate drug prices in 3 developed (Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea) and 3 emerging (China, India, and Malaysia) economies of the Asia Pacific region. Despite continuous efforts by the authorities in adopting a wide range of reformatory pharmaceutical pricing policies to ensure affordability of medicines, these policies may not be optimal where drug prices were not lowered as expected (eg, in Korea).

A comparison of warfarin monitoring service models.

Background: Warfarin-related knowledge and patient satisfaction with warfarin monitoring services are generally high with respect to anticoagulation-related care received. Providing a cost-effective warfarin monitoring service while improving warfarin-related knowledge, patient safety and satisfaction can be challenging.

Objectives: To compare 'post and dose' service offered by the Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH) and 'face-to-face' service offered by Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) in terms of costs of service delivery, patient satisfaction, warfarin-related knowledge and safety indicators.

Carica papaya Linn is the member of Caricaceae family of Kingdom Plantae. The study was executed for the development of qualitative standards of male and female leaves of the plant. Methods: Patients were identified who had bilateral coronal craniosynostosis treated with endoscopic suturectomy and postoperative helmeting at Boston Children's Hospital between 2005 and 2013 and who underwent preoperative and postoperative computed tomography.

DNA microarray analysis using a smartphone to detect the BRCA-1 gene.

DNA microarrays are used to examine changes in gene expression of a large number of genes simultaneously by fluorescent labeling of complementary DNAs (cDNAs). The major bottleneck in implementing microarray technology in resource-limited settings lies in the detection instrument used for generating images of spotted oligonucleotides post-hybridization. While various methods such as a lateral flow assay have been presented to accomplish point-of-care disease detection, there is no simple and effective instrument available to gather spot images maintaining the standard microarray procedures.

Resection of an Embolized Cirsoid Aneurysm With Intracranial Venous Drainage: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Cirsoid aneurysms, also known as scalp arteriovenous malformations (AVM), are rare congenital extracranial vascular anomalies that often present as an enlarging pulsatile scalp mass. A 14-yr-old male presented with a pulsatile scalp lesion that was first noticed 3 yr prior and had progressively enlarged. No history of trauma was reported.

Quantification of shoulder muscle intramuscular fatty infiltration on T1-weighted MRI: a viable alternative to the Goutallier classification system.

Background: Quantification of rotator cuff intramuscular fatty infiltration is important for clinical decision-making in patients with rotator cuff tear. The semi-quantitative Goutallier classification system is the most commonly used method, but has limited reliability. Therefore, we sought to test a freely available fuzzy C-means segmentation software program for reliability of the quantification of shoulder intramuscular fatty infiltration on T1-weighted MR images and for correlation with fat fraction by six-point Dixon MRI.

Peroxidase mimetic activity of fluorescent NS-carbon quantum dots and their application in colorimetric detection of HO and glutathione in human blood serum.

Interest is growing in the development of artificial enzymes to overcome the drawbacks of natural enzymes. Herein, we have synthesized nitrogen-sulphur dual-doped carbon quantum dots (NS-CQDs) via a one-step hydrothermal method; the NS-CQDs possess excellent optical properties and a high fluorescent quantum yield (46%). Significantly, the NS-CQDs exhibited peroxidase mimetic enzyme activity without support from metals or polymeric materials and efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of peroxidase substrate 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of HO to produce a blue solution with an absorption maximum at 652 nm.

Long term clinical outcomes of adult hematolymphoid malignancies treated at Tata Memorial Hospital: An institutional audit.

Introduction: There is paucity of data from India about the outcomes of patients with various hematological malignancies. Since its formation in 2009, the adult hematolymphoid disease management group of the Tata Memorial Centre is dedicated to the treatment of hematological malignancies alone. In this report, we present the outcomes of patients treated at our centre over a 5 year period for various haematological malignancies in both transplant and non-transplant setting.

Cost analysis of type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment in economically developed countries.

Introduction: There is a growing need to evaluate the factors contributing to the increase in health expenditures, as well as the cost of medicines used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the economically developed countries.

Areas Covered: A systematic searching of studies describing the direct cost of T2DM and medicine cost of treating T2DM. The quality of the studies found eligible for this study were assessed using a methodological quality appraisal tool.

A Scoping Review of the Quality and the Design of Evaluations of Mobile Health, Telehealth, Smart Pump and Monitoring Technologies Performed in a Pharmacy-Related Setting.

There is currently a need for high quality evaluations of new mobile health, telehealth, smart pump and monitoring technologies undertaken in a pharmacy-related setting. We aim to evaluate the use of these monitoring technologies performed in this setting. A systematic searching of English articles that examined the quality and the design of technologies conducted in pharmacy-related facilities was performed using the following databases: MEDLINE and Cumulative index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) to identify original studies examining the quality and the design of technologies and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Association between beliefs about medicines and self-medication with analgesics among patients with dental pain.

Self-medication with analgesics in dental pain management is a common practice as most of these medicines are available over-the-counter (OTC). The study aims to examine the relationship between beliefs about medicines and self-medication with analgesics in dental pain management in Malaysia. This cross-sectional study was conducted among conveniently sampled patients attending dental clinics, located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to assess association between self-medication with analgesics and patient's beliefs about medicines via Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire.
