Objectives: This study aimed to determine the rate and severity patterns of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and identify antenatal and postnatal factors associated with BPD in preterm infants <32 weeks of gestational age (GA).

Methods: This retrospective observational study included preterm neonates <32 weeks of gestation admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit between January 2010 and December 2017 at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman. A data set of antenatal and perinatal factors were collected.

Background: Phenotypic characterization of the prevalent AmpC β-lactamases in clinical isolates is essential for making informed empirical decisions and critical for strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programmes. This study focused on assessing six assays, two in-house and four commercial phenotypic tests for detection of AmpC, to study the feasibility of making its detection a routine diagnostic microbiology laboratory activity.

Methods: A total of 116 non-duplicate Gram-negative bacteria that were resistant to third-generation cephalosporins and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and resistant or susceptible to piperacillin/tazobactam and carbapenems, were screened by cefoxitin discs for AmpC.

Background: Complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) is defined as an infection associated with structural, functional, or metabolic abnormalities of the genitourinary tract. These infections are caused frequently by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. The rapid emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC, and carbapenemase (CR) producers has made the treatment of such infections increasingly more challenging.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine extubation failure (EF) rate among intubated preterm infants (<37 weeks gestational age [GA]) admitted to a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Oman and identify the risk factors associated with EF.

Methods: This retrospective study included all intubated preterm infants (<37 weeks GA) admitted to the NICU at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) from January 2013 to December 2017. EF was defined as reintubation within seven days of planned extubation.

In Oman, breast cancer is most common, representing approximately more than 25% of all cancers in women. Relatively younger populations of patients (25-40 years) present surprisingly with an aggressive phenotype and advanced tumor stages. In this study, we investigated differential gene expressions in Luminal A, Luminal B, triple-negative and Her2+ breast cancer subtypes and compared data to benign tumor samples.

The phenomenology of factitious disorders from the Arab part of the world has been lacking in the medical literature and few reports have emerged from otolaryngology. Using an observational prospective case series study (n = 19) with long-term follow-up (two to six years), the present study reports the magnitude and mode of clinical profile of factitious disorders in a tertiary care hospital in Oman, an Arab-Islamic country. The outcome was operationalized as prognosis following culturally sensitive intervention akin to confrontation technique.
