For life to survive outside the biosphere, it must be protected from UV light and other radiation by exterior shielding or through sufficient inherent resistance to survive without protection. We tested the plausibility of inherent resistance in plant seeds, reporting in a previous paper that Arabidopsis thaliana and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) seeds exposed for 558 days outside the International Space Station (ISS) germinated and developed into fertile plants after return to Earth. We have now measured structural genetic damage in tobacco seeds from this EXPOSE-E experiment by quantitatively amplifying a segment of an antibiotic resistance gene, nptII, inserted into the chloroplast genome.

The heats of formation of alkyl-substituted XH4 (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) ΔfH(M(+)) = IEad(M) + ΔfH (M) molecular ions have often never been measured or are not known to better than 10 or 20 kJ/mol. The present study on these Main Group IV compounds adopts a graphical approach that relates cation heats of formation to cation size. A study of methyl substitution in XH4 is followed by a similar examination of heat of formation data on ethyl substitution in methane, silane, germane, stannane, and plumbane.

A relation between the heat of formation of molecular ions and cation size is used to study the effects of methyl substitution on a series of species containing oxygen. These include methanol, the hydroxymethyl radical, formaldehyde and related isomers, acetaldehyde and related isomers, ketene, formic acid, and acetic acid. This size-dependent relation is found to be valid in most cases, enabling a choice to be made among conflicting reported ion and neutral heat of formation values, but it holds much less well in methyl-substituted formaldehyde and its carbene isomers.

We have synthesised nine monomeric azaheterofullerene (AZA) derivatives, RC(59)N, with a wide variety of different side chains R and investigated their spectroscopic and photophysical properties in toluene and o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB). Measurements include their ground-state absorption spectra, molar absorption coefficient (epsilon(G)), fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yields (Phi(F)), singlet-state lifetimes (tau(F)), triplet-state absorption spectra, triplet molar absorption coefficients (epsilon(T)), singlet oxygen (Phi(Delta)), and triplet state (Phi(T)) quantum yields. The replacement of a carbon by a nitrogen atom in the C(60) sphere strongly affects most of the spectroscopic and photophysical properties.
