Article Synopsis
  • The yellowfin snapper, a newly described fish species in the Indo-Pacific region, has limited knowledge regarding its biology and ecology, resulting in a "Data Deficient" conservation status.
  • Research focused on analyzing the COI gene for species identification and comparing haplotypes from various locations, including Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia.
  • It was found that while Brunei Darussalam had greater genetic diversity and signatures of population expansion, identical haplotypes across different sites indicated little spatial genetic structure, while distinct population structures correlated with specific geographical regions.

Grouper aquaculture is rapidly expanding in both tropical and subtropical regions. The presence of marine leeches (; previously named ) infesting cultured groupers, however, can have a fatal effect on grouper aquaculture production and cause significant economic loss. Understanding the marine leech's population structure is therefore important to determine its possible distributional origin and distributional mechanisms, which will help monitor and mitigate the infestation.

Grouper is an important food fish due to its commercial value. A major production constraint in culturing grouper is that the fish can be fatally affected by leeches and diseases. Leeches are an ectoparasite of grouper, which can cause significant loss in fish number, and thus controlling their prevalence is indispensable as a tool of aquaculture management.
