Obesity is highly associated with a non-home discharge following total ankle arthroplasty.

Studies have shown that non-home discharge following orthopedic procedures is associated with a higher risk of 30-day complications and significantly increases medical costs. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for being discharged to a non-home destination following total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). We included patients undergoing TAA from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (NSQIP) between 2014 and 2019.

Methods: This prospective study was conducted from March 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022, in the Ophthalmology Department of the Abass NDAO Hospital (Dakar, Senegal). The clinical classification of DR was based on American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Impact of Rounding Checklists on the Outcomes of Patients Admitted to ICUs: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of ICU rounding checklists on outcomes.

Data Sources: Five electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were searched from inception to May 10, 2024.

Study Selection: Cohort studies, case-control studies, and randomized controlled trials comparing the use of rounding checklists to no checklists were included.

Liberal or Restrictive Transfusion Strategy in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury.

Background: The effect of a liberal transfusion strategy as compared with a restrictive strategy on outcomes in critically ill patients with traumatic brain injury is unclear.

Methods: We randomly assigned adults with moderate or severe traumatic brain injury and anemia to receive transfusion of red cells according to a liberal strategy (transfusions initiated at a hemoglobin level of ≤10 g per deciliter) or a restrictive strategy (transfusions initiated at ≤7 g per deciliter). The primary outcome was an unfavorable outcome as assessed by the score on the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended at 6 months, which we categorized with the use of a sliding dichotomy that was based on the prognosis of each patient at baseline.

Control of the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne incognita in soil and on tomato roots by Clonostachys rosea.

Aims: Clonostachys rosea is a well-known mycoparasite that has recently been investigated as a bio-based alternative to chemical nematicides for the control of plant-parasitic nematodes. In the search for a promising biocontrol agent, the ability of the C. rosea strain PHP1701 to control the southern root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita was tested.

Surgical Treatment of Upper Cervical Spine Trauma: Experience in a Regional Neurosurgery Unit in a Country with Limited Health Care Resources-About 22 Consecutives Cases.

 Representing approximately 22% of cervical spine injuries, upper cervical spine injuries are becoming more frequent with the increase in road traffic accidents. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the results of our surgical series and to compare them with the literature.  In this monocentric retrospective study of over three years (June 2019-May 2022), all the patients with traumatic injuries of the upper cervical spine with a surgical treatment and a minimum of 12 months follow-up were included.

Evaluating service needs for veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome in Saskatchewan.

To determine the number of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who would be eligible to receive veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). We conducted a retrospective observational study of ARDS patients admitted to Regina General Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). VV-ECMO eligibility was assessed using selection criteria from the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome trial (EOLIA), the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), New South Wales (NSW), Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO) and a Regina-restrictive criteria.

Background: Among critically ill patients receiving mechanical ventilation, Candida spp. are commonly detected in the lower respiratory tract (LRT). This is generally considered to represent colonization.

Medial Double Arthrodesis Through Single Approach.

Triple arthrodesis is a time-tested procedure toward primary salvage in the context of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, symptomatic rigid and severe hindfoot malalignment, end-stage degenerative and posttraumatic arthritis, and sequelae of paralytic diseases. Today, the indication for hindfoot arthrodesis is applied to correct painful deformities and arthritic joints, such as advanced cases of adult-acquired flatfoot secondary to ligament collapse and insufficiency of the posterior tibial tendon. Although the triple arthrodesis is an effective and reliable outcome procedure, the popularity of a medial double arthrodesis has increased.

Severe brain injury in children aged 0-5 years in urban areas: the role of socio-economic development and parental responsibility.

Cranioencephalic trauma is a transient or permanent cerebral dysfunction resulting from a direct or indirect shock applied to the skull and its contents. The aim of this study was to establish the aetiological and favourable factors for the occurrence of cranioencephalic trauma in children under 5 years of age in an urban environment, in order to expose the implication of socio-economic development and parental responsibility. This was a 5-year mixed-methods analytical study from 10/07/2017 to 10/07/2022.

Determining the sustainability of legal wildlife trade.

Exploitation of wildlife represents one of the greatest threats to species survival according to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Whilst detrimental impacts of illegal trade are well recognised, legal trade is often equated to being sustainable despite the lack of evidence or data in the majority of cases. We review the sustainability of wildlife trade, the adequacy of tools, safeguards, and frameworks to understand and regulate trade, and identify gaps in data that undermine our ability to truly understand the sustainability of trade.

Neck Swelling in a Critically Ill Patient With COVID-19-Related Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome on Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: Consider the Differential.

Neck swelling during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) usually heralds the development of potentially serious complications, including superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome, hematoma, and/or angioedema. In this case report, we describe a 43-year-old male patient who had received VV-ECMO support for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) acute respiratory distress syndrome. During his hospitalization, he developed acute onset of neck swelling after two weeks of VV-ECMO and two days after a tracheostomy.

Optional MRI sequences for LI-RADS: why, what, and how?

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignant tumor of the liver worldwide. Noninvasive diagnosis of HCC is possible based on imaging features, without the need for tissue diagnosis. Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) CT/MRI diagnostic algorithm allows for standardized radiological interpretation and reporting of imaging studies for patients at high risk for HCC.

Wellness and Coping of Physicians Who Worked in ICUs During the Pandemic: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional North American Survey.

Objectives: Few surveys have focused on physician moral distress, burnout, and professional fulfilment. We assessed physician wellness and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design: Cross-sectional survey using four validated instruments.

Identification and Quantification of a Problematic Host Cell Protein to Support Therapeutic Protein Development.

Monitoring of residual host cell proteins (HCPs) in therapeutic protein is essential to ensure product quality, safety and efficacy. Despite the development of advanced mass spectrometry techniques and optimized workflows, identifying and quantifying all problematic HCPs present at low levels remain challenging. Here, we developed a practical, effective strategy for the identification and quantification of low abundance HCPs, which facilitates the improvement of downstream purification process to eliminate potentially problematic HCPs.

External validation of the hospital frailty risk score among older adults receiving mechanical ventilation.

To externally validate the Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) in critically ill patients. We selected older adult (≥ 75 years old) hospitalizations receiving mechanical ventilation, using the Nationwide Readmissions Database (January 1, 2016-November 30, 2018). Frailty risk was subcategorized into low-risk (HFRS score < 5), intermediate-risk (score 5-15), and high-risk (score > 15).

Cardiac impairments in postacute COVID-19 with sustained symptoms: A review of the literature and proof of concept.

Although acute COVID-19 is known to cause cardiac damage in some cases, there is still much to learn about the duration and relative permanence of the damage that may occur. Long COVID is a condition that can occur when COVID-19 symptoms remain in the postviral acute period. Varying accounts of long COVID have been described across the literature, however, cardiac impairments are sustained in many individuals and cardiovascular assessment is now considered to be an expected follow-up examination.

Fractal Structure of Brain Electrical Activity of Patients With Mental Disorders.

This work was aimed at a comparative analysis of the degree of multifractality of electroencephalographic time series obtained from a group of healthy subjects and from patients with mental disorders. We analyzed long-term records of patients with paranoid schizophrenia and patients with depression. To evaluate the properties of multifractal scaling of various electroencephalographic time series, the method of maximum modulus of the wavelet transform and multifractal analysis of fluctuations without a trend were used.

Spinal metastases of bronchopulmonary cancer: Role of spinal surgery and value of prognostic scores (Modified Tokuhashi and Tomita).

Introduction: Bone metastasis is frequent in bronchopulmonary cancer. We report a series of 52 patients, and analyze indications and the efficacy of surgery.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively studied the records of 52 patients operated on for spinal metastases of bronchopulmonary cancer over a 6-year period from January 2009 to December 2014 in the neurosurgery department of the North Hospital of Marseille, France.

Trends and outcomes of mechanically ventilated cirrhotic patients in the United States from 2005-2014.

Purpose: Cirrhotic patients in organ failure are frequently admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) to receive invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). We evaluated the trends of hospitalizations, in-hospital mortality, hospital costs, and hospital length of stay (LOS) of IMV patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: We analyzed the United States National Inpatient Sample from 2005-2014.

Long-term Safety of Directly Discharging Patients Home from the ICU Compared to Ward Transfer.

To evaluate the long-term safety of directly discharging intensive care unit (ICU) survivors to their home. A retrospective observational cohort of 341 ICU survivors who were directly discharged home from the ICU ("direct discharge") or discharged home ≤72 hours after ICU transfer to the ward ("ward transfer") was conducted in Regina, Saskatchewan ICUs between September 1, 2016 and September 30, 2018. The primary outcome was 90-day hospital readmission.
