Evaluation of Genome Sequences of the Bacteriophages JeTaime and Luna22.

The mycobacteriophages JeTaime (E cluster) and Luna22 (Q cluster) were isolated from soil in Providence, Rhode Island, and Charleston, South Carolina, respectively, using a Mycobacterium smegmatis mc 155 host. The genome of JeTaime is 75,099 bp (142 predicted genes), and that of Luna22 is 53,730 bp (87 predicted genes). Both phages exhibit morphology.

The utility of four biochemical markers in the triage of chest pain patients.

Four biochemical markers, creatine kinase (CK)-MB isoenzyme, myoglobin, myosin light chains and troponin I, were studied in 1,338 patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain suggestive of coronary artery disease (CAD). One hundred and eighty-seven patients had an acute myocardial infarction (MI). At least one of the four markers was over the threshold on the first sample in 78% of MI patients, as compared to only 40% with an elevated CK-MB.

Fatal disseminated herpes simplex in pregnancy with maternal and neonatal death.

Disseminated herpes is rare in the adult and usually occurs in the immunocompromised. Twenty-one cases have been reported in which healthy women contracted life-threatening disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in the third trimester of pregnancy. Most of these patients had nonspecific symptoms, and many did not have mucocutaneous lesions.

Luteinized thecoma with sclerosing peritonitis presenting as an acute abdomen.

The seventh reported case of luteinized thecoma with sclerosing peritonitis is described. Unlike the other reported patients with this condition, the patient presented with a short history of secondary amenorrhea, a subsequent acute abdomen, and an absence of abdominal distention and ascites. The tumor had undergone extensive hemorrhagic necrosis secondary to infarction, and the patient's amenorrhea may have been secondary to the release of steroid hormones from the necrotic cells.

A black girl was born with flexion contractures and experienced pain on movement by 1 week of age. She subsequently developed perioral papules, gingival hyperplasia, perianal nodules, torticollis, diarrhea, rectal prolapse, and inability to open her mouth. Her skin became increasingly sclerodermatous, and velvety, hyperpigmented plaques arose over bony prominences.
