Fatty acids are a requirement for normal development, however, since humans are unable to de novo produce essential fatty acids, they must be obtained from diet. Atlantic salmon is a major dietary source of nutritious and digestible fatty acids. Here, we set out to uncover the genomic basis of individual fatty acids and indices (saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-3, and n-6) in 208 North American Atlantic salmon, to understand selection potential toward increasing relative quantities of essential fatty acids and to identify candidate genes for future research.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using time-series analyses to monitor both fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses as a way to spot emerging drug threats and detect fatal overdose outbreaks early.
  • Researchers analyzed county-level data from California and Florida from 2015 to 2021, using the Farrington algorithm to identify unusual increases in overdose counts alongside a standard method for comparison.
  • Findings showed that while both methods generated similar alerts for non-fatal overdoses, the benchmark method identified more alerts for fatal overdoses, with the sensitivity of detecting ongoing fatal overdose outbreaks being 66% at the county level and around 77-81% at the regional level.

Articular cartilage injuries in young patients pose a notable treatment dilemma. Multiple reported techniques exist, although some of the most prominent methods currently rely on multiple procedures for chondrocyte harvest and colony expansion prior to implantation. The associated cost and effort this requires limits availability on a global basis, which creates a need for a more widely available cartilage procedure.

(Lib.) de Bary, an economically devastating soilborne fungal pathogen known to cause disease across a wide range of plants, produces long-term inoculum called sclerotia that can germinate either carpogenically by ascospores infecting aboveground plant parts or myceliogenically to infect stem base and roots. Typically, for research purposes, diseases are initiated by direct contact methods, using mycelium agar plugs wrapped around the stem or sclerotia placed directly beneath root mass.

Tuberculosis (TB), an aerosol-transmitted infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), remains the commonest cause of death globally, from an infectious bacterial disease. Nine years on from the launch of the World Health Organization (WHO)'s END-TB strategy, disease incidence rates are stubbornly unchanged [1]. While this represents, in part, a reversal of improving trends caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it also reflects the fragility and inadequacy of healthcare systems to sustain TB control [2].

Background: Incipient tuberculosis, a progressive state of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection with an increased risk of developing into tuberculosis disease, remains poorly characterised. Animal models suggest an association of progressive infection with bacteraemia. Circulating M tuberculosis DNA has previously been detected in pulmonary tuberculosis by use of Actiphage, a bacteriophage-based real-time PCR assay.

Increase in serum bile acids (BAs) in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) may play a causal role in cholestatic pruritus (itch). Linerixibat is a selective small molecule inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter, which blocks re-absorption of BAs in the gastrointestinal tract thereby lowering BAs in the systemic circulation and reducing itch. One consequence is excess BAs in the colon, leading to diarrhea and abdominal pain.
