The immunologic and virologic status of a chimpanzee inoculated with multiple isolates of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) were assessed over 57 months to determine whether prolonged thrombocytopenia and CD4+ lymphocytopenia observed in the animal might be associated with long-term HIV infection. Although the chimpanzee showed no signs of disease, it lost both CD4+ (as low as 134 cells/microliter) and CD8+ lymphocytes approximately 30 months after initial infection, followed by thrombocytopenia that has persisted for greater than 2 years. Lymphopenia and thrombocytopenia were preceded by or coincided with the appearance of antibodies cross-reactive with histone H2B and decreased levels of complement component C4; an eightfold decrease in HIV-specific antibody titers; the inability of CD8+ lymphocytes to suppress virus replication; impaired proliferative responses to T cell mitogens; and the isolation of cell-free HIV from plasma.

Rats whose mothers had been treated with 1 microgram of arginine vasopressin (AVP) or oxytocin (OXT), 15 mg of caffeine, or saline on days 13-19 of gestation were given training on a passive avoidance response as adults. Female rats whose mothers had been exposed to either AVP or caffeine demonstrated enhanced retention of the response. No effects were found for male rats or for exposure to oxytocin.

Injection of wheatgerm agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase into electrophysiologically identified portions of the rodent sensorimotor and medial frontal cortex revealed anterograde-labeled projections to the inferior olivary complex. Forelimb motor cortical and supplementary motor cortical regions were found to project predominantly to the principal olive while forelimb sensory cortex fibers distributed mainly within the dorsal accessory olive. Forelimb cortical fibers (both sensory and motor) terminated more rostrally and medially in the medial and dorsal accessory olives than did hindlimb projections.

Following inoculation of chimpanzees, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) establishes a long-term persistent infection characterized by seroconversion and the presence in peripheral blood cells of recoverable virus which can be quantitated. Because most HIV-infected chimpanzees have developed no signs of clinical diseases or hematologic abnormalities, their virologic, serologic and other immune responses can be compared with those of asymptomatic HIV-infected persons. This analysis might lead to the identification of factors important in preventing the development of disease.

Adult rats that sustained unilateral motor cortical lesions at birth demonstrated deficits in traversing an elevated narrow beam. A highly efficient new affinity medium for deoxycytidine kinase, deoxycytidine 5'-tetraphosphate-Sepharose (dCp4-Sepharose), has been constructed. A dCp4-Sepharose column effects a one-step, 19,000-fold, purification to homogeneity of dCyd kinase from the ammonium sulfate fraction of Lactobacillus acidophilus R-26 extract, with 60% recovery. dCTP, a potent end-product inhibitor, is used as an eluent, and it also stabilizes the extremely labile purified enzyme.

High-fidelity hemodynamic recordings of aortic and right atrial pressures and the coronary perfusion gradient (the difference between aortic and atrial pressure) were made in nine patients during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Findings during conventional manual CPR were compared with those during high-impulse CPR (rate, 120 cycles/min with a shorter compression:relaxation ratio) as well as during pneumatic vest CPR with and without simultaneous ventilation and abdominal binding. Aortic peak pressure during conventional CPR averaged 61 +/- 29 mm Hg but varied widely (range, 39-126 mm Hg) among patients.

Two chimpanzees, one (C-499) infected with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-associated retrovirus type 2 (ARV-2) strain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and one (C-560) infected with the lymphadenopathy-associated virus type 1 (LAV-1) strain of HIV, were inoculated with approximately 10(4) tissue culture infective doses of the reciprocal strain. At the time of the second inoculation, both chimpanzees had high titers of HIV-specific antibodies, including antibodies that neutralized both virus strains. After inoculation of the second strain of HIV, the antibody titers in both chimpanzees increased 4- to 10-fold, and in one chimpanzee (C-499), the numbers of infectious peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) increased 1,000-fold to levels that are comparable with those observed after primary HIV infections.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and is now recognized as a worldwide epidemic for which there is no cure or vaccine. Chimpanzees are the only other animals that can be infected by HIV, and therefore the chimpanzee-HIV model system is useful for testing potential HIV vaccines. However, with one exception, there have been no reports of clinical manifestations of AIDS in chimpanzees.
