Objective: Stent graft therapy has emerged as an alternative to open surgery in the management of chronic dissection-related aneurysmal degeneration (DRAD) in the descending thoracic aorta (DTA). The incidence of perioperative complications, need for secondary aortic intervention (SAI), and rate of aneurysmal false-lumen thrombosis have not been thoroughly described.
Methods: Perioperative and midterm outcomes in patients who underwent stent graft therapy for chronic DRAD DTA at a single institution between January 2006 and September 2013 were retrospectively analyzed.
The use of an electronic alerting system to notify practitioners when a patient meets modified systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria was hypothesized to decrease the time to goal-directed therapy initiation. This retrospective, before-and-after study analyzed adult patients identified with sepsis or septic shock and compared 30 patients prior to electronic alert initiation with 30 patients after initiation. The primary endpoint was time to any sepsis-related intervention.

Objective: To determine whether there is a difference in antibody titers and functionality after receipt of the influenza vaccine for obese versus nonobese healthcare workers (HCW).
Design: Prospective observational study.
Setting: Tertiary medical center.
Selective antibiotic treatment of white syndrome (WS)-affected corals (Acropora muricata) from Fiji was used to identify 3 potential bacterial pathogens of the disease. Interestingly, the suite of bacterial associates of the disease was different to that recently identified using identical primer sets for WS on the GBR and in the Solomon Islands. In addition to the three bacterial pathogenic candidates and as previously shown for WS and more recently for white band disease (WBD) in the Caribbean, all samples of the disease were specifically associated with the histophagous ciliate Philaster lucinda.

Introduction: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most common cardiomyopathy and occurs often in families. As an inherited disease, understanding the significance of diagnostic procedures and genetic screening within families is of utmost importance.
Areas Covered: Genetic studies have shown that in 30-40% of familial DCM (FDC) cases a causative genetic mutation can be identified.
Aim: To develop a model of stress-induced senescence to study the hepatocyte senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
Methods: Hydrogen peroxide treatment was used to induce senescence in the human HepG2 hepatocyte cell line. Senescence was confirmed by cytochemical staining for a panel of markers including Ki67, p21, heterochromatin protein 1β, and senescence-associated-β-galactosidase activity.
Teaching of responsible conduct of research is largely predicated on the assumption that there are accepted standards of conduct that can be taught. However there is little evidence of consensus in the scientific community about such standards, at least for the practices of authorship, collaboration, and data management. To assess whether such differences in standards are based on disciplinary differences, a survey, described previously, addressing standards, practices, and perceptions about teaching and learning was distributed in November 2010 to US faculty from 50 graduate programs for the biomedical disciplines of microbiology, neuroscience, nursing, and psychology.

The study aim was to investigate the efficacy of three surgical techniques, namely neochordoplasty, limited triangular resection and edge-to-edge repair, to correct anterior leaflet flail in an in-vitro experimental model.

Visual inspections of this novel coral syndrome showed no obvious signs of macroparasites and the blisters themselves manifested as fluid-filled sacs on the surface of the coral, which rose from the coenosarc between the coral polyps. Histological analysis of the blisters showed that there was no associated necrosis with the epidermal or gastrodermal tissues.

Owing to their more recent identification, and hindered by a lack of selective pharmacological tools, our understanding of the functions and signaling pathways of the non-Edg GPCRs is still in its infancy. Targeting the non-conserved allosteric binding sites of the LPL GPCRs shows particular promise for the development of selective modulators by structure-based drug design.

Although tumor-associated host tissues can express SerpinB2, no significant differences in the growth of a panel of different tumors in SerpinB2(-/-) and SerpinB2(+/+) mice were observed. SerpinB2 expression by cancer cells (via lentiviral transduction) also had no significant effect on the growth of panel of mouse and human tumor lines in vivo or in vitro.
