Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the lung, is characterized by reversible airway obstruction and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), and is associated with increased production of IgE and Th2-type cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13). Development of inflammation within the asthmatic lung depends on MHC class II-restricted Ag presentation, leading to stimulation of CD4(+) T cells and cytokine generation. Conventional MHC class II pathways require both MHC-associated invariant chain (Ii) and HLA-DM (H2-M in mice) chaperone activities, but alternative modes of Ag presentation may also promote in vivo immunity.

The ability of certain organophosphorus (OP) compounds to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has made them useful for industrial (insecticides) and military (nerve agents) purposes. We have previously published a single compartment mathematical model of the interactions between OP nerve agents and the enzymes affected by these agents. That model, which could be used to predict the LD50 of seven nerve agents in rats, has been extended to include the protective actions of stoichiometric and catalytic OP-scavenger enzymes (delivered as pretreatments) so that protective ratios attributable to the scavengers may be predicted.

Our objective was to develop and evaluate a non-invasive device for rigid immobilisation during extremity angiography. The patented BodyFix immobilisation device (Medical Intelligence, Schwabmünchen, Germany) consists of a vacuum pump connected to special cushions and a plastic foil that covers the body part to be immobilised. First, the patient's extremity is covered by a thin plastic bag and then wrapped in one of the cushions, placed on the top of the therapy couch, and covered with the plastic foil.

The clinical and pathologic findings are reviewed for 14 horses with metastatic melanoma. All were older gray horses, with an average age of 16 years. The most common sites of primary tumors were the ventral tail, perineum, and parotid salivary gland.

The aim of the study was to implement a vibrotactile stimulator using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A fMRI compatible vibration device consisting of a pneumatically driven dual membrane pump was developed. Brain activation during 50 Hz vibrotactile stimulation of the right hand-palm were compared to a right 2 Hz finger-to-thumb-tapping in ten healthy, right-handed male volunteers.

Purpose: Primary skull base tumors of the developing child are rare and present a formidable challenge to both surgeons and radiation oncologists. Gross total resection with negative margins is rarely achieved, and the risks of functional, structural, and cosmetic deficits limit the radiation dose using conventional radiation techniques. Twenty-nine children and adolescents treated with conformal proton radiotherapy (proton RT) were analyzed to assess treatment efficacy and safety.

To evaluate the usefulness of virtual endoscopy (VE) in planning neuroendoscopic intraventricular surgeries, the technique was applied in 20 of 22 consecutive procedures. Thirteen endoscopic third ventriculostomies (ETV) in 12 patients, 3 endoscopic colloid cyst removals, 1 third ventricular arachnoidal cyst fenestration, 1 endoscopic ventricul-cysto-cisternostomy (suprasellar arachnoidal cyst), 1 endoscopic tumor biopsy, one third ventricular gross total tumor removal and 2 septostomies at the foramen of Monro due the septal occlusion were performed. Contrast medium-enhanced MR images (3DMPRAGE, Siemens, Germany) were semi-automatically segmented with a surface-rendering technique ("Navigator" software, General Electric Medical, Buc, France) to produce the virtual endoluminal views.

Objectives: Subcortical lesions in the sensorimotor strip are often considered to be inoperable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a combined approach for surgery in this region, aided by a robotic neuronavigation system under electrophysiological control.

Methods: In a prospective study on 10 patients, space occupying lesions in the sensorimotor central area were removed using the Surgiscope robotic navigation system and the Nicolet Viking IV electrophysiological system.

Injury is the number one cause of death and life-years lost for children. In children, injury mortality is greater than childhood mortality from all other causes combined. Modern injury prevention and control seeks to prevent and limit or control injuries through the 4 Es of injury prevention: engineering, enforcement, education, and economics.

Irradiation causes specific MRI changes in anatomic morphology and signal intensity. To avoid misinterpretation, it is important to consider the potential radiation changes of normal tissue in MRI. The aim of this study was to describe the detected radiation effects on normal cervical tissues in MRI.

Objective: To evaluate sensitivity and specificity of a new ELISA for antibodies against Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis.

Design: Cross-sectional observational survey.

Sample Population: Serum samples from 590 cattle that were infected with M avium subsp paratuberculosis and 723 cattle that were not infected.

Purpose: To demonstrate why conventional non-invasive mouthpiece-based fixation has not achieved the expected accuracy and to suggest a solution of the problem.

Patients And Methods: The Vogele Bale Hohner (VBH) head holder is a non-invasive vacuum mouthpiece-based head fixation system. Feasibility and repositioning accuracy were evaluated by portal image analysis in 12 patients with cranial tumors intended for stereotactic procedures, fixated with the newest version (VBH HeadFix-ARC).

The sensitivity and specificity of the ELISA and fecal culture tests for paratuberculosis in dairy cattle are examined. ELISA and fecal culture data from seven dairy herds where both fecal cultures and ELISA testing was done concurrently are included. A cohort of 954 cattle including 697 parturient adults, cultured every 6 months from 10 herds followed over 4 years served as the basis to determine fecal culture sensitivity.

Ribonuclease A (RNase A) catalyzes the cleavage of RNA after pyrimidine nucleotides. When bound in the active site, the base of a pyrimidine nucleotide forms hydrogen bonds with the side chain of Thr45. Here, the role of Thr45 was probed by using the wild-type enzyme, its T45G variant, X-ray diffraction analysis, and synthetic oligonucleotides as ligands and substrates.

Opiate detoxification using methadone programmes are inefficient and expensive. Rapid and ultra-rapid detoxification using precipitated withdrawal under heavy sedation or anaesthesia provide increased efficiency and speed, but are limited by the requirement for high-dependency facilities and are perceived as high-risk procedures. Procedures using precipitated withdrawal over longer periods with lower sedation are safer, but 20% of patients fail to tolerate these.
