Umbilical cord blood (UCB) and bone marrow (BM)-derived stem and progenitor cells possess two characteristics required for successful tissue regeneration: extensive proliferative capacity and the ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages. Within the normal BM and in pathological conditions, areas of hypoxia may have a role in maintaining stem cell fate or determining the fine equilibrium between their proliferation and differentiation. In this study, the transcriptional profiles and proliferation and differentiation potential of UCB CD133(+) cells and BM mesenchymal cells (BMMC) exposed to normoxia and hypoxia were analyzed and compared.

In situ hybridization reveals diffuse Oat6 expression throughout olfactory epithelium, yet olfactory neurons laser-capture microdissected from either the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) or the vomeronasal organ (VNO) did not express Oat6 mRNA. These data suggest that Oat6 is expressed in non-neuronal cells of olfactory tissue, such as epithelial and/or other supporting cells.

Results: Development of silicone hydrogel contact lenses is presented as well as development of synthetic materials for implantation on the corneal surface (corneal onlay).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to confirm that two distinct clinical presentations of contact lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis (CLPC), local and general, occur in hydrogel lens wear.
Methods: Retrospective analyses of 124 CLPC events were identified. The classification of CLPC was based on location and extent of papillae.

Purpose: To assess the long-term biocompatibility and optical clarity of a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) polymer as a corneal inlay.
Methods: A 4-mm-diameter PFPE inlay was implanted under a microkeratome flap in the corneas of rabbits (n = 16) and maintained for predetermined time points of 6, 12, or 24 months. These were compared with normal (n = 3) and time-matched sham-wounded rabbit corneas (n = 8).

We report a case of hyponatremic seizures in a 7-year old boy with spina bifida following cystoscopy and suprapubic catheter placement. Immediate postoperative cystogram and pelvic computed tomogram (CT) after the development of seizures demonstrated a fluid collection from the suprapubic catheter site into the anterior abdominal wall. The subsequent reabsorption of free water from the fluid collection, with the contribution of postoperative hypotonic intravenous fluid administration and possible transient inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion resulted in acute dilutional hyponatremia and consequent seizures.

Although many variations on surgical technique exist, the most common cause remains attributable to hypersuspension of the urethra. A thermal profiling study was undertaken at four depths at each of nine sites, and at the inlets and outlets of a large waste stabilisation pond (WSP). Results were collected simultaneously using a network of 42 thermistors and dataloggers. Materials And Methods: Twenty female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four equal groups: a control group (C) had no intervention before the leak-point pressure (LPP) was measured; a denervated group (D) had bilateral proximal sciatic nerve transection (PSNT) and periurethral dissection with no sling placed; group S had concomitant bilateral PSNT and a suburethral sling of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) placed; and group (M) had concomitant bilateral PSNT with implantation of a tissue-engineered sling. The suburethral sling was placed via a transabdominal approach with the sling sutured to the pubic bone.
Partial monosomy of the q2 region of chromosome 15 has been infrequently reported. Moreover, interstitial deletions involving 15q22-q24 have been described in only nine patients to date. The phenotype of these reported individuals is subject to the extent of the deletion but typically includes altered muscle tone and significant developmental delays.

Cortical dysplasia can be focal or diffuse and the insult depends more on the timing of the defect in neural development and to a lesser extent the cause. Identification of cortical dysplasia can be done using high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), histological examination of affected tissue, and EEG.
