- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the third most common type of infection, and the study aimed to reduce antibiotic overuse by using procalcitonin (PCT) as a diagnostic tool for bacterial infections.
- A prospective observational study was conducted with 200 patients exhibiting UTI symptoms, where PCT levels and other routine tests were performed to determine treatment paths.
- The study found that patients with low PCT levels could be managed conservatively without antibiotics, thereby helping to decrease the risk of developing multidrug-resistant bacteria.
