The substrate specificities of Ntg1p and Ntg2p are similar but not identical, and differences in their amino acid sequences as well as inducibility by DNA damaging agents suggest that the two proteins may have different biological roles and subcellular locations. Experiments performed on oligonucleotides containing a variety of oxidative base damages indicated that dihydrothymine, urea, and uracil glycol are substrates for Ntg1p and Ntg2p, although dihydrothymine was a poor substrate for Ntg2p.

The present study tested the efficacy and safety of a parenteral beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination, ampicillin/sulbactam, and a beta-lactamase-stable cephalosporin, cefuroxime, in serious pediatric skin and skin structure infections requiring hospitalization and parenteral antimicrobial therapy.
Methods: This was a multicenter, randomized, prospective, comparative open label trial that enrolled patients 3 months through 11 years of age.
Glutamate uptake is coupled to counter-transport of K+, and high external K+ concentrations can induce reversal of glutamate uptake in whole-cell patch-clamp and isolated membrane preparations. However, high external K+ causes little or no reversal of glutamate uptake in intact astrocytes, suggesting a regulatory mechanism not evident in membrane preparations. One mechanism by which intact cells could limit the effects of altered extracellular ion concentrations on glutamate transport is by compensatory changes in intracellular Na+ concentrations.

The present work shows that this interface also affects CTP and CTP-UTP inhibition and proposes a structural explanation for the effects. Mutant enzymes derived from nonselective mutagenesis of residues r101-r106 (residues that contribute part of the interface) displayed a variety of homotropic and heterotropic effects.
