Sport hunting, predator control and conservation of large carnivores.

Sport hunting has provided important economic incentives for conserving large predators since the early 1970's, but wildlife managers also face substantial pressure to reduce depredation. Sport hunting is an inherently risky strategy for controlling predators as carnivore populations are difficult to monitor and some species show a propensity for infanticide that is exacerbated by removing adult males. Simulation models predict population declines from even moderate levels of hunting in infanticidal species, and harvest data suggest that African countries and U.

Improving the accuracy of pulsed field gradient NMR diffusion experiments: Correction for gradient non-uniformity.

Pulsed field gradient NMR is a well-established technique for the determination of self-diffusion coefficients. However, a significant source of systematic error exists in the spatial variation of the applied pulsed field gradient. Non-uniform pulsed field gradients cause the decay of peak amplitudes to deviate from the expected exponential dependence on gradient squared.

HIV partner notification: predictors of discussion and agreements from provider reports.

This study examines organizational, provider, client, and test-event level predictors of HIV partner notification (PN) discussion and agreements based on providers' most recent HIV-positive post-test counseling session. Staff (n = 621) were sampled from for-profit, nonprofit, and county government HIV testing organizations (N = 159) in Los Angeles County from 2003 to 2007. Among providers who conducted an HIV-positive post-test counseling session (n = 204), 65% discussed PN but only 10% had confirmed agreement to provider-involved PN (PIPN).

A tool for self-assessment of communication skills and professionalism in residents.

Background: Effective communication skills and professionalism are critical for physicians in order to provide optimum care and achieve better health outcomes. The aims of this study were to evaluate residents' self-assessment of their communication skills and professionalism in dealing with patients, and to evaluate the psychometric properties of a self-assessment questionnaire.

Methods: A modified version of the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Patient Assessment survey was completed by 130 residents in 23 surgical and non-surgical training programs affiliated with a single medical school.

Primary psoas muscle abscess in pregnancy.

Primary iliacus-psoas muscle abscess formation is very uncommon during pregnancy. We present a case of a primary iliacus-psoas muscle abscess in pregnancy causing back pain with delayed diagnosis and treatment. Understanding the clinical presentation of iliacus-psoas muscle abscess helps with considering it in the differential diagnosis of back pain during pregnancy.

Using a LIDAR Vegetation Model to Predict UHF SAR Attenuation in Coniferous Forests.

Attenuation of radar signals by vegetation can be a problem for target detection and GPS reception, and is an important parameter in models describing vegetation backscatter. Here we first present a model describing the 3D distribution of stem and foliage structure based on small footprint scanning LIDAR data. Secondly we present a model that uses ray-tracing methodology to record detailed interactions between simulated radar beams and vegetation components.

Improving chronic kidney disease care in primary care practices: an upstate New York practice-based research network (UNYNET) study.

Background: With the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States rising from 10% to 13%, implementation of the evidence-based Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines, which were developed for the delay of progression of CKD, is of increasing importance in primary care offices. Previous studies have shown limited knowledge and uptake of Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines by primary care physicians. CKD and its complications are still largely under-diagnosed and under-treated.

Comparison of neurotization versus nerve repair in an animal model of chronically denervated muscle.

Purpose: Reinnervation of chronically denervated muscle is clinically unpredictable and poorly understood. Current operative strategies include either direct nerve repair, nerve grafting, nerve transfer, or neurotization. The goal of this study is to compare muscle recovery using microneural repair versus neurotization in a rat model of chronic denervation.

The in vivo three-dimensional motion of the human lumbar spine during gait.

Lumbar spine pathology accounts for billions of dollars in societal costs each year. Although the symptomatology of these conditions is relatively well understood, the mechanical changes in the spine are not. Previous direct measurements of lumbar spine mechanics have mostly been performed on cadavers.

Randomized, placebo-controlled trial of bupropion for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence.

Objective: To compare bupropion to placebo for reducing methamphetamine (MA) use, increasing retention, and reducing the severity of depressive symptoms and MA-cravings. A secondary objective compared bupropion to placebo for reducing cigarette smoking among MA dependent participants.

Methods: Following a 2-week, non-medication baseline screening period, 73 treatment-seeking MA dependent participants were randomly assigned to bupropion sustained release (150 mg twice daily; N=36) or placebo (twice daily; N=37) for 12-weeks under double-blind conditions.

Client encounters in alternative HIV testing sites: counselors' perceptions and experiences.

In this study, the authors explored HIV test counselors' perceptions of and experiences working with "difficult" and "good" clients in alternative HIV testing sites. Trained interviewers made field observations and conducted sixteen 60-minute, semistructured interviews with counselors. Counselors reported 7 main characteristics of difficult clients: (1) uncooperative, (2) mean, (3) inebriated, (4) threatening, (5) "crazy," (6) sexually inappropriate, and (7) aesthetically unappealing/overly appealing.

Reliability of physical performance and self-reported functional measures in an older population.

Background: Functional assessments and direct measures of physical performance are standard components of community-based studies of older populations. Estimates of the reliability of these measures are necessary for the assessment of functional change.

Methods: The reproducibility of 13 measures of self-reported function and 11 direct measures of physical performance was assessed.

Temporal and spatial patterns of eukaryotic and bacterial communities found in vernal pools.

In this study, we examined the effects of physicochemical variability on the microbial communities of vernal pools. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis revealed temporal changes to be more pronounced than spatial changes in eukaryotic and bacterial communities. Sequencing revealed high degrees of richness in decomposers, which supports the notion that vernal pools are heterotrophic habitats.

Bidirectional promoter interference between two widely used internal heterologous promoters in a late-generation lentiviral construct.

Gene transfer vectors encoding two or more genes are potentially powerful research tools and are poised to play an increasingly important role in gene therapy applications. Common strategies employed to express more than one transgene per vector include the use of multiple promoters, internal ribosome entry site (IRES) elements, splicing signals and fusion proteins. Of these, the IRES elements and multiple promoters have been most widely used.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures and collapse with intravertebral vacuum sign (Kümmel's disease).

The intravertebral vacuum phenomenon was first described by Kümmel and is also known as delayed vertebral collapse or vertebral pseudarthrosis. Clinically, it occurs in approximately 10% of vertebral osteoporotic fractures, mainly in the thoracolumbar zone, is accentuated on extension views and associated with benign fractures. Most patients are neurologically intact, and continued pain is a common symptom that responds well to stabilization.

Outcomes of blood and oral fluid rapid HIV testing: a literature review, 2000-2006.

Rapid HIV antibody testing is a new technology whose implementation promises to facilitate the early detection of persons with HIV/AIDS. The goal of this study was to review and summarize the literature from 2000-2006 regarding four outcomes of rapid (including both blood and oral fluid) HIV testing: rates of client acceptance; rates of clients' receiving their test results; rates of entry into medical care for those found to be HIV positive; and the efficacy of prevention counseling after testing. A total of 116 studies in peer-reviewed journals were screened.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis: technology and clinical applications.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a method by which embryos formed through in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be tested for single-gene disorders or chromosome abnormalities prior to embryo transfer. This enables couples to significantly improve their chances of having a healthy child. PGD is an important addition to conventional prenatal diagnosis for genetic disorders.

Calreticulin and Hsp90 stabilize the human insulin receptor and promote its mobility in the endoplasmic reticulum.

Elimination of misfolded membrane proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) affects cell survival and growth and can be triggered by either local physiologic events or disease-associated mutations. Regulation of signaling receptor degradation involves both cytosolic and ER luminal molecular chaperones, but the mechanisms and timing of this process remain uncertain. Here we report that calreticulin (CRT) and Hsp90 exert distinct effects on the stability and cell surface levels of native and misfolded forms of the human insulin receptor (hIR) and a human variant found in type A insulin resistance.

Failure to return for HIV test results: a pilot study of three community testing sites.

Background: Individuals at elevated risk of contracting HIV frequently fail to return for their test result. Because rapid HIV antibody testing is still not widely implemented, failure to return for test results under conditions of standard testing remains a problem.

Methods: Direct field observation and semistructured interviews with clients (N = 16) and test counselors (N = 16) of 3 community HIV testing sites were conducted.

Communicating indeterminate HIV Western blot test results to clients: an observational study of three community testing sites.

This study examined HIV test counselors' beliefs and practices regarding communicating indeterminate HIV test results to clients. There are many reasons for an indeterminate HIV antibody/ Western blot assay including early HIV infection, infection with other contagious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and second or subsequent pregnancies in women. Field observations of three community HIV testing sites and semistructured interviews with 16 HIV test counselors were conducted from August 2002 through June 2003.

Adhesion- and degranulation-promoting adapter protein (ADAP) is required in TCR-induced activation and proliferation of peripheral T cells. Loss of ADAP also impairs TCR-initiated inside-out activation of the integrin LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18, alphaLbeta2). In this study, we demonstrate that ADAP-deficient CD4/CD8 double-positive (DP) cells have a diminished ability to proliferate, and that these DP thymocytes up-regulate CD69 poorly in vivo.
