The global seasonal cycle of energy in Earth's climate system is quantified using observations and reanalyses. After removing long-term trends, net energy entering and exiting the climate system at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) should agree with the sum of energy entering and exiting the ocean, atmosphere, land, and ice over the course of an average year. Tropical forest photosynthesis can decline at high temperatures due to (1) biochemical responses to increasing temperature and (2) stomatal responses to increasing vapor pressure deficit (VPD), which is associated with increasing temperature. It is challenging to disentangle the influence of these two mechanisms on photosynthesis in observations, because temperature and VPD are tightly correlated in tropical forests. Nonetheless, quantifying the relative strength of these two mechanisms is essential for understanding how tropical gross primary production (GPP) will respond to climate change, because increasing atmospheric CO concentration may partially offset VPD-driven stomatal responses, but is not expected to mitigate the effects of temperature-driven biochemical responses.

Ketamine is an effective intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), including late-in-life (LL-TRD). The proposed mechanism of antidepressant effects of ketamine is a glutamatergic surge, which can be measured by electroencephalogram (EEG) gamma oscillations. Yet, non-linear EEG biomarkers of ketamine effects such as neural complexity are needed to capture broader systemic effects, represent the level of organization of synaptic communication, and elucidate mechanisms of action for treatment responders.

Positron cooling in CF_{4} and N_{2} gases via inelastic vibrational and rotational (de)excitations is simulated, importantly including elastic positron-positron collisions. For CF_{4}, it is shown that rotational (de)excitations play no role on the experimental timescale, and further, that in the absence of positron-positron collisions, cooling via excitation of the dipole-active ν_{3} and ν_{4} modes alone would lead to a non-Maxwellian positron momentum distribution, in contrast to the observations of experiment. It is shown that the observed Maxwellianization of the distribution may be effected by positron-positron collisions and/or cooling involving the combination of the dipole-inactive ν_{1} mode with the dipole-active modes.
