Large language models (LLMs) with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) have improved information extraction over previous methods, yet their reliance on embeddings often leads to inefficient retrieval. We introduce CLinical Entity Augmented Retrieval (CLEAR), a RAG pipeline that retrieves information using entities. We compared CLEAR to embedding RAG and full-note approaches for extracting 18 variables using six LLMs across 20,000 clinical notes.

In this Letter, we calculate the optical and magneto-optical reflectivity in a dielectric/gap/ferromagnet excited by a -polarized monochromatic optical beam through the prism (Otto configuration) as a function of the angle of incidence and the gap thickness . Besides the well-known surface plasmon polariton (SPP resonance at  ∼ ), we find a new, to the best of our knowledge, resonance with a nanometric gap  ∼ 10 nm at a large  ∼ 80°. Both resonances display pronounced resonant behavior in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE).

Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) presents with the onset of fever, altered sensorium and/or seizures, known to be caused by various infectious and non-infectious aetiological agents, among which viruses are the commonest. The severity of AES prompts rapid diagnosis, which is not met by time-consuming conventional diagnostic techniques. In this study, archived cerebrospinal fluid samples of laboratory-confirmed viral AES, an acute infectious condition and Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a post-infectious, autoimmune condition was assessed for soluble membrane attack complex (sMAC) using ELISA.

Accurate analysis of anxiety behaviors in animal models is pivotal for advancing neuroscience research and drug discovery. This study compares the potential of DeepLabCut, ZebraLab, and machine learning models to analyze anxiety-related behaviors in adult zebrafish. Using a dataset comprising video recordings of unstressed and pre-stressed zebrafish, we extracted features such as total inactivity duration/immobility, time spent at the bottom, time spent at the top and turn angles (large and small).

How genotype determines phenotype is a well-explored question, but genotype-environment interactions and their heritable impact on phenotype over the course of evolution are not as thoroughly investigated. The fish Astyanax mexicanus, comprising surface and cave ecotypes, is an ideal emerging model to study the genetic basis of adaptation to new environments. This model has permitted quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and whole-genome comparisons to identify the genetic bases of traits such as albinism and insulin resistance and has helped in the better understanding of fundamental evolutionary mechanisms.
