Several recent reports indicate that cholesterol might play an important role in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication. We investigated the effects of HIV-1 infection on cholesterol biosynthesis and uptake using microarrays. HIV-1 increased gene expression of cholesterol genes in both transformed T-cell lines and primary CD4(+) T cells.

Impaction and fracture of a video capsule in the small bowel requiring laparotomy for removal of the capsule fragments.

Capsule endoscopy has become an important diagnostic tool because of its high sensitivity and specificity for evaluation of the small-bowel mucosa. It is usually a safe procedure. The main complication has been retention of the video capsule in patients with unsuspected obstructive small-bowel disease.

Tourette syndrome and tic disorders: overview and practical guide to diagnosis and treatment.

Objective: This is a practical review of Tourette syndrome, including phenomenology, natural history, and state-of-the-art assessment and treatment.

Method: Computerized literature searches were conducted under the keywords Tourette syndrome,tics, and children-adolescents.

Results: Studies have documented the natural history of Tourette syndrome and its frequent co-occurrence with attention problems, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and a range of other mood and anxiety disorders, which are often of primary concern to patients and their families.

Impact of advanced age on weight loss and health benefits after laparoscopic gastric bypass.

Background: Advanced age is considered a relative contraindication to primary bariatric surgery at some institutions. As life expectancy is steadily increasing and quality of life is improving in our elderly population, we may need to reconsider the health benefits that obese elderly patients can obtain from bariatric surgery. Therefore, we examine the operative outcomes, weight loss, reduction of comorbidities, and medication requirements in patients older than 60 years compared with those younger than 60 years undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Cloning, expression and properties of porcine trachea UDP-galnac: polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyl transferase.

A UDP-GalNAc:polypeptide N-acetyl-galactosaminyl transferase which catalyses the transfer of GalNAc from UDP-GalNAc to serine and threonine residues in mucin polypeptide chains was purified to homogeneity from swine trachea epithelium (Mendicino J, Sangadala S: Mol Cell Biochem 185: 135-145, 1998). Peptides obtained by proteolysis of the purified enzyme were isolated, sequenced and used to prepare degenerate oligonucleotide primers. Amplified segments of a gene encoding GalNAc transferase were synthesised using the primers and a swine trachea epithelial cDNA library.

Effects of a low-glycemic load diet on resting energy expenditure and heart disease risk factors during weight loss.

Context: Weight loss elicits physiological adaptations relating to energy intake and expenditure that antagonize ongoing weight loss.

Objective: To test whether dietary composition affects the physiological adaptations to weight loss, as assessed by resting energy expenditure. DESIGN, STUDY, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized parallel-design study of 39 overweight or obese young adults aged 18 to 40 years who received an energy-restricted diet, either low-glycemic load or low-fat.

Reversible phosphorylation, involving protein kinases and phosphatases (PP), is important in regulating oocyte meiosis. Okadaic acid (OA) inhibition of PP1 and/or PP2A stimulates oocyte germinal vesicle breakdown (GVB). In oocytes, PP1 is localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus, yet endogenous regulation of oocyte PP1 has not been investigated.

Primary care perspective on bariatric surgery.

The role of primary care physicians in identifying potential candidates for bariatric surgery and providing them with long-term postoperative care is gaining rapidly in importance. With the increased use of surgical procedures as treatment options for obesity, a knowledge of bariatric surgery is essential for providing optimal care. During the past decade, the number of bariatric procedures has increased, and refinements of these procedures have made them safer and more effective.

Measurement of branching fractions and charge asymmetries in B+/--->rho+/-pi0 and B+/--->rho0pi+/- decays, and search for B0-->rho0pi0.

We present measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries in B-meson decays to rho(+)pi(0), rho(0)pi(+), and rho(0)pi(0). The data sample comprises 89x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BBmacr; decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We find the charge-averaged branching fractions B(B+-->rho(+)pi(0))=[10.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of laser-ablated carbon plume propagation in varying background gases for single-walled nanotube synthesis.

A computational fluid dynamics study was conducted to model the plume resulting from the laser ablation of a carbon target in a laser ablation oven for the production of carbon single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs). The goal is to gain understanding into the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of the plume to ultimately improve SWNT production techniques. The simulations were carried out with a 12-species, 14-reaction chemistry model that included carbon species from C to C6.

Treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures with variable screw placement or Isola instrumentation and arthrodesis: case series and literature review.

Background: The controversy of burst fracture surgical management is addressed in this retrospective case study and literature review.

Methods: The series consisted of 40 consecutive patients, index included, with 41 fractures treated with stiff, limited segment transpedicular bone-anchored instrumentation and arthrodesis from 1987 through 1994.

Results: No major acute complications such as death, paralysis, or infection occurred.

We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in decays of neutral B mesons to the final states D(*-/+)pi(+/-), using approximately 82x10(6) BBmacr; events recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring. Events containing these decays are selected with a partial reconstruction technique, in which only the high-momentum pi(+/-) from the B decay and the low-momentum pi(-/+) from the D(*-/+) decay are used. We measure the amplitude of the asymmetry to be -0.

We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in fully reconstructed B0-->D(*)+/-pi-/+ decays in approximately 88 x 10(6) upsilon(4S)-->BBmacr; decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit we obtain the following for the CP-violating parameters: a=-0.022+/-0.

Single photon detectors for biology: present and future.

A summary of the status of present technology for the detection of single photons is presented with a view towards applications in biophotonics. Included are careful discussions of the numerous problems that can be encountered and how to get around them with the hope that this will be of help to biologists interested in doing work in the field of biophotonics. Emphasis is placed on traditional devices, but the field is one which is continuously developing and we review the status of new and very interesting technologies which are becoming available.

Direct effects of leptin on mouse reproductive function: regulation of follicular, oocyte, and embryo development.

Because body condition can affect reproduction, research has focused on the role of leptin, a body condition signal, in regulation of reproductive function. Objectives of this study were to determine if leptin supplementation directly affects 1) ovarian follicle growth and function, 2) oocyte maturation, or 3) preimplantation embryo development. Follicles cultured in the presence of recombinant mouse leptin resulted in a significant decrease in rate of follicle, but not oocyte, growth in a dose-dependent manner, with higher doses of leptin inhibiting growth.

Primary parental preoccupation: circuits, genes, and the crucial role of the environment.

Parental caregiving includes a set of highly conserved behaviors and mental states that may reflect both an individual's genetic endowment and the early experience of being cared for as a child. This review first examines the mental and behavioral elements of early parental caregiving in humans. Second, we consider what is known about the neurobiological substrates of maternal behaviors in mammalian species including some limited human data.

Limits on the decay-rate difference of neutral B mesons and on CP, T, and CPT violation in B(0-0)B oscillations.

Using events in which one of two neutral B mesons from the decay of an Upsilon(4S) meson is fully reconstructed, we determine parameters governing decay (DeltaGamma(d)/Gamma(d)), CP, and T violation (|q/p|), and CP and CPT violation (Re z,Im z). The results, obtained from an analysis of 88 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S) decays recorded by BABAR, are sgn(Re lambda(CP))DeltaGamma(d)/Gamma(d)=-0.008+/-0.

Measurement of the branching fractions and CP asymmetry of B--->D(0)((CP))K- decays with the BABAR detector.

We present a study of B--->D(0)(CP)K- decays, where D(0)(CP) is reconstructed in CP-even channels, based on a sample of 88.8 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring. We measure the ratio of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored branching fractions B(B--->D(0)(CP)K-)/B(B--->D(0)(CP)pi(-))=[8.

We present measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries in decays of B mesons to two-body final states containing a K0. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 88 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We measure B(B+-->K(0)pi(+))=(22.

Measurements of the mass and width of the eta(c) meson and of an eta(c)(2S) candidate.

The mass m(eta(c)) and total width Gamma(eta(c))(tot) of the eta(c) meson have been measured in two-photon interactions at the SLAC e(+)e(-) asymmetric B Factory with the BABAR detector. With a sample of approximately 2500 reconstructed eta(c)-->K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+) decays in 88 fb(-1) of data, the results are m(eta(c))=2982.5+/-1.
