This study investigates the use of photoluminescent amphiphilic porous silicon nanoparticles (αϕ-pSiNPs) as effective ultrasound (US) amplifiers for cancer sonodynamic theranostics. αϕ-pSiNPs were synthesized via a novel top-down approach involving porous silicon (pSi) films electrochemical etching, borate oxidation, and hydrophobic coating with octadecylsilane (C18), resulting in milling into nanoparticles with hydrophilic exteriors and hydrophobic interiors. These properties promote gas trapping and cavitation nucleation, significantly lowering the US cavitation threshold and resulting in selective destruction of cancer cells in the presence of nanoparticles.

The purpose of this study is to achieve a significant increase in the proliferative activity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) of the bone marrow (BM) at early passages after laser exposure to a suspension of these cells and to estimate the effect of light and heat components of laser radiation on the proliferation of BM MSCs. The studies were performed on rats BM MSCs. MSC suspension was placed into the wells and heated by using laser radiation (980 nm wavelength) or a water bath at 70 °C providing similar temperature dynamics.

The laser-induced decay of an atomic system in an intense infrared and perturbative extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse is considered within Keldysh and streaking ionization channels. The streak camera method is discussed for two cases corresponding to different ranges of photoelectron momentum: i) the streaking channel significantly dominates the Keldysh channel and ii) the Keldysh channel of ionization is dominant, while two channels may interfere. The retrieval of XUV pulse parameters for these two cases is discussed and supported by numerical calculations.

Cholesterol determination by cholesterol oxidase reaction is a fast, convenient, and highly specific approach with widespread use in clinical diagnostics. Routinely, endpoint measurements with 4-aminophenazone or 4-aminoantipyrine as chromogens and sodium cholate, surfactants, or alcohols as solubilizing agents are used. Here we describe a novel kinetic method to determine cholesterol in 0.

We studied the effect of laser radiation of moderate intensity with a wavelength of 970 nm on the efficiency of colony formation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in vitro. In this case, photobimodulation and thermal heating of MSC occur simultaneously. This combined laser treatment allows increasing the number of colonies by 6 times in comparison with the control and by more than 3 times in comparison with thermal heating alone.

As-prepared mesoporous silicon nanoparticles, which were synthesized by electrochemical etching of crystalline silicon wafers followed by high-energy milling in water, were explored as a sonosensitizer in aqueous media under irradiation with low-intensity ultrasound at 0.88 MHz. Due to the mixed oxide-hydride coating of the nanoparticles' surfaces, they showed both acceptable colloidal stability and sonosensitization of the acoustic cavitation.

We determined optimal parameters of bone marrow (BM) irradiation in vivo for rapid increase in the number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) at the initial stages of the culturing without changing the karyotype, polyploidy, which are observed at higher passages. Such an increase is necessary to achieve the required number of cells at the initial passages for subsequent transplantation into the body. It was shown that after irradiation with λ=0.

Using molecular dynamics, we demonstrated that in the mixture of carbon dioxide and ethanol (25% molar fraction) there are three pronounced regions on the p-T diagram characterized by not only high-density fluctuations but also anomalous behavior of thermodynamic parameters. The regions are interpreted as Widom deltas. The regions were identified as a result of analyzing the dependences of density, density fluctuations, isobaric thermal conductivity, and clustering of a mixture of carbon dioxide and ethanol in a wide range of pressures and temperatures.

In regenerative medicine, the problem of growing mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow often arises. In such cases is important that the number of initial cells was large enough and their proliferative activity was high. We believe that this problem can be solved by short-term heating of local areas of the bone marrow in vivo with laser radiation.

The supercritical CO (scCO) is widely used as solvent and transport media in different technologies. The technological aspects of scCO fluid applications strongly depend on spatial-temporal fluctuations of its thermodynamic parameters. The region of these parameters' maximal fluctuations on the p-T (pressure-temperature) diagram is called Widom delta.

Development of porous silicon-based drug delivery systems for theranostics requires a precise control of their biodegradation. Thus, we propose a model for the biodegradation of porous silicon nanoparticles (PSi NPs) based on a diffusion equation combined with Nernst-Brunner mass transfer equation describing the dissolution of silicon and formation of silicic acid (SA). The spatiotemporal distributions of PSi NP porosity and SA concentration were calculated.

Moderate heating of collagenous tissues such as cartilage and cornea by infrared laser irradiation can produce biologically nondestructive structural rearrangements and relaxation of internal stresses resulting in the tissue reshaping. The reshaping results and eventual changes in optical and biological properties of the tissue strongly depend on the laser-irradiation regime. Here, a speckle-contrast technique based on monochromatic illumination of the tissue in combination with strain mapping by means of optical coherence elastography (OCE) is applied to reveal the interplay between the temperature and thermal stress fields producing tissue modifications.

The presence of nanoparticles lowers the levels of ultrasound (US) intensity needed to achieve the therapeutic effect and improves the contrast between healthy and pathological tissues. Here, we evaluate the role of two main mechanisms that contribute to the US-induced heating of aqueous suspensions of biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) of mesoporous silicon prepared by electrochemical etching of heavily boron-doped crystalline silicon wafers in a hydrofluoric acid solution. The first mechanism is associated with an increase of the attenuation of US in the presence of NPs due to additional scattering and viscous dissipation, which was numerically simulated and compared to the experimental data.

The current contrast agents utilized in ultrasound (US) imaging are based on microbubbles which suffer from a short lifetime in systemic circulation. The present study introduces a new type of contrast agent for US imaging based on bioresorbable Janus nanoparticles (NPs) that are able to generate microbubbles in situ under US radiation for extended time. The Janus NPs are based on porous silicon (PSi) that was modified via a nanostopper technique.

Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) prepared by mechanical grinding of luminescent porous silicon were coated with a biopolymer (dextran) and investigated as a potential theranostic agent for bioimaging and sonodynamic therapy. Transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence and Raman scattering measurements of dextran-coated SiNPs gave evidence of their enhanced stability in water. In vitro experiments confirmed the lower cytotoxicity of the dextran-coated NPs in comparison with uncoated ones, especially for high concentrations of about 2 mg ml.
