Background: The relationship between processes of early stroke care and hospital costs remains unclear.

Aims: We therefore examined the association in a population based cohort study.

Methods: We identified 5909 stroke patients who were admitted to stroke units in a Danish county between 2005 and 2010.

Response of various conduit arteries in tachycardia- and volume overload-induced heart failure.

Although hemodynamics changes occur in heart failure (HF) and generally influence vascular function, it is not clear whether various HF models will affect the conduit vessels differentially or whether local hemodynamic forces or systemic factors are more important determinants of vascular response in HF. Here, we studied the hemodynamic changes in tachycardia or volume-overload HF swine model (created by either high rate pacing or distal abdominal aortic-vena cava fistula, respectively) on carotid, femoral, and renal arteries function and molecular expression. The ejection fraction was reduced by 50% or 30% in tachycardia or volume-overload model in four weeks, respectively.

Genetic diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in a population by next-generation sequencing.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most prevalent inherited neuropathy. Today more than 40 CMT genes have been identified. Diagnosing heterogeneous diseases by conventional Sanger sequencing is time consuming and expensive.

Associations between overweight, peer problems, and mental health in 12-13-year-old Norwegian children.

Overweight and mental health problems represent two major challenges related to child and adolescent health. More knowledge of a possible relationship between the two problems and the influence of peer problems on the mental health of overweight children is needed. It has previously been hypothesized that peer problems may be an underlying factor in the association between overweight and mental health problems.

Using motion capture to assess colonoscopy experience level.

Aim: To study technical skills of colonoscopists using a Microsoft Kinect™ for motion analysis to develop a tool to guide colonoscopy education.

Results: Ten experienced endoscopists (gastroenterologists, n = 2; colorectal surgeons, n = 8) and 11 novices participated in the study. A Microsoft Kinect™ recorded the movements of the participants during the insertion of the colonoscope.

Design of a school-based randomized trial to reduce smoking among 13 to 15-year olds, the X:IT study.

Background: Adolescent smoking is still highly prevalent in Denmark. One in four 13-year olds indicates that they have tried to smoke, and one in four 15-year olds answer that they smoke regularly. Smoking is more prevalent in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in Denmark as well as in most Western countries.

Differential effects of age on large artery stiffness and minimal vascular resistance in normotensive and mildly hypertensive individuals.

Large artery stiffness and small artery structural changes are both cardiovascular risk factors. Arterial stiffness increases with age and blood pressure (BP), but it is unclear in which way large artery pulse wave velocity (PWV) and peripheral vascular resistance are related and whether age has any influence. In a cross-sectional study, PWV and forearm minimum vascular resistance (Rmin ) was compared with emphasis on the impact of age.

Genomic predictions based on a joint reference population for the Nordic Red cattle breeds.

The main aim of this study was to compare accuracies of imputation and genomic predictions based on single and joint reference populations for Norwegian Red (NRF) and a composite breed (DFS) consisting of Danish Red, Finnish Ayrshire, and Swedish Red. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data for NRF consisted of 2 data sets: one including 25,000 markers (NRF25K) and the other including 50,000 markers (NRF50K). The NRF25K data set had 2,572 bulls, and the NRF50K data set had 1,128 bulls.

Genetic correlations between claw health and feet and leg conformation in Norwegian Red cows.

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic correlations between claw disorders and feet and leg conformation traits in Norwegian Red cows. A total of 188,928 cows with claw health status recorded at claw trimming from 2004 to September 2013 and 210,789 first-lactation cows with feet and leg conformation scores from 2001 to September 2013 were included in the analyses. Traits describing claw health were corkscrew claw, infectious claw disorders (dermatitis, heel horn erosion, and interdigital phlegmon), and laminitis-related claw disorders (sole ulcer, white line disorder, and hemorrhage of sole and white line).

A novel mutation in the EDAR gene causes severe autosomal recessive hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

We report on a 2-year-old girl presenting with a severe form of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED). The patient presented with hypotrichosis, anodontia, hypohidrosis, frontal bossing, prominent lips and ears, dry, pale skin, and dermatitis. The patient had chronic rhinitis with malodorous nasal discharge.

Objective: To investigate meal pattern longitudinally and explore whether meal skipping was associated with overweight among Norwegian children and adolescents.

Introduction: Complications to oesophageal and junctional cancer surgery are common and have not diminished much during the past ten years. An unusually high occurrence of anastomotic dehiscence occurred in Denmark in 2009 and 2010 as seen in the national database for oesophagus, cardiac and gastric (ECV) cancer.

Material And Methods: In accordance with national guidelines, all patients resected for oesophageal and junctional cancer in Denmark from 2003 were prospectively entered into a national database.

However, the existing studies have methodological limitations and have, with one exception, not included hemorrhagic strokes. We performed a nationwide historic follow-up study using data from population-based healthcare registries to assess the effect of preadmission OAT on stroke outcomes further.

Background: The treatment of heart failure (HF) is complex and the prognosis remains serious. A range of strategies is used across health care systems to improve the quality of care for HF patients. We present results from a nationwide multidisciplinary initiative to monitor and improve the quality of care and clinical outcome of HF patients using indicator monitoring combined with systematic auditing.

The aim of this study was genetic analyses of claw health in Norwegian Red. Claw health status at claw trimming has, since 2004, been recorded in the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System. The claw trimmer records whether the cow has normal (healthy) claws or if one or more claw disorders are present.

Conductance sizing balloon for measurement of peripheral artery minimal stent area.

Background: Because stent underdeployment occurs frequently, accurate minimal stent area (MSA) measurement during postdilatation is necessary. This study investigated the accuracy and repeatability for MSA determination using a novel conductance balloon (CB) catheter for peripheral vessels.

Methods: The CB catheter is a standard balloon catheter that measures electrical conductance (ratio of current/voltage drop) in real-time during inflation, which directly relates to the balloon cross-sectional area through Ohm's law.

Objective: Skeletal-related events (SREs) among women with breast cancer may be associated with considerable use of health-care resources. We characterized inpatient and outpatient hospital visits in a national population-based cohort of Danish women with SREs secondary to breast cancer and bone metastases.

Methods: We identified first-time breast cancer patients with bone metastases from 2003 through 2009 who had a subsequent SRE (defined as pathologic fracture, spinal cord compression, radiation therapy, or surgery to bone).
