Background: Patients under cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are at high risk of aspirating gastric contents. Nasogastric tube insertion (NGTI) after tracheal intubation is usually performed blindly. This sometimes causes laryngopharyngeal mucosal injury (LPMI), leading to severe bleeding.

To improve the prognosis of quadriceps contracture, improvement of its diagnostic method is needed. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic utility of ultrasound shear wave elastography in a rat model of quadriceps contracture induced by immobilization.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether three-week supplementation of L-glutamine could benefit the mucosal immunity and hormonal status of combat-sport athletes as well as their rates of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and subjective feelings of well-being after intensive training.
Methods: Twenty-one combat-sport athletes from the National Taiwan University of Sport were recruited in this study.
Background: Protruding aortic plaque is known to be associated with an increased risk for future cardiac and cerebrovascular events. However, the relationship between protruding aortic plaque and coronary plaque characteristics has not been systematically investigated.
Methods And Results: A total of 615 patients who underwent computed tomography angiography, and preintervention optical coherence tomography imaging were included.
This study aims to elucidate the effectiveness and safety of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We enrolled uninfected SLE patients who received two vaccine doses (BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273) and historical unvaccinated patients. Neutralizing antibodies, adverse reactions, and disease flares were evaluated 4 weeks after the second vaccination.

Here we show, in β-cells from overweight humans without diabetes and mice fed a high-fat diet for 2 days, insulin exocytosis and secretion are enhanced without increased Ca influx. RNA-seq of sorted β-cells suggests altered metabolic pathways early following high fat diet, where we find increased basal oxygen consumption and proton leak, but a more reduced cytosolic redox state.

Patients who do not respond well to NAC have a poor prognosis. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms of chemoresistance in ESCC remain largely unknown.

There is no clinical evidence of differences in drugs associated with long-term survival in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) due to the small population and lack of information on death in Japanese medical database systems. This study evaluated whether patient data from a spontaneous reporting database could be used for comparing the effects of pulmonary vasodilators on long-term survival in PAH patients. PAH patient data reported in the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database from April 2004 to July 2022 were extracted.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA wide range of de novo protein structure designs have been achieved, but the complexity of naturally occurring protein structures is still far beyond these designs. Here, to expand the diversity and complexity of de novo designed protein structures, we sought to develop a method for designing 'difficult-to-describe' α-helical protein structures composed of irregularly aligned α-helices like globins. Backbone structure libraries consisting of a myriad of α-helical structures with five or six helices were generated by combining 18 helix-loop-helix motifs and canonical α-helices, and five distinct topologies were selected for de novo design.

Ethylene glycol is an industrially important diol in many manufacturing processes and a building block of polymers, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate). In this study, we found that a mycolic acid-containing bacterium Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 can grow with ethylene glycol as a sole source of carbon and energy. Deletion of a putative glycolate dehydrogenase gene (RHA1_ro03227) abolished growth with ethylene glycol, indicating that ethylene glycol is assimilated via glycolate in R.

Therefore, we aimed to investigate the predictors of retreatment after coil embolization for unruptured BAs, with a particular focus on the absolute and relative size of the aneurysm (size ratio [SR]).
Methods: To evaluate the predictors of retreatment, patients were divided into two groups: those with and those without retreatment.
This case illustrates the complex interactions of the immune responses after vaccination and highlights their potential connections to various autoimmune conditions. A 22-year-old man with quiescent ulcerative colitis (UC) presented with abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and thrombocytopenia 7 days after receiving the third coronavirus disease 2019 mRNA vaccination. Laboratory data confirmed the diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia.

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a hyperintense lesion extending from the right parietal lobe to the left parietal lobe. Compared with these MRI results, F-THK5351 PET revealed more extensive accumulation.

We herein report a case involving a patient with lung adenocarcinoma metastasis within a PitNET who exhibited relatively rapid progression of neurological symptoms. A 75-year-old man who underwent tumor resection 36 and 18 years prior to presentation for bladder and colon cancer, respectively, without recurrence presented with bitemporal hemianopsia, ptosis, and diplopia of the right eye.

We investigated the differences in clinical outcomes in patients with and without ICAD.
Methods: We analyzed the Japan Trevo Registry, a nationwide registry which enrolled patients with acute LVO who underwent endovascular therapy (EVT) using the Trevo retriever alone or in combination with an aspiration catheter.
The renal angina index (RAI) is a validated scoring tool for predicting acute kidney injury (AKI). We investigated the efficacy of the RAI in 2436 heterogeneous patients (mean age, 70 years) treated in cardiac intensive care units (CICUs). The RAI was calculated from creatinine and patient condition scores.

Its pathogenesis has been speculated as a remnant of "distal annexation" between the primitive anterior choroidal artery (AchA) and the PCA at this site, but the exact mechanisms remain unclear.
Observations: A 29-year-old man presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage.
A deep-seated, locally infiltrative 5.8-cm brain metastasis (BM) involving the ventricular wall and optic radiation is deemed unamenable for a safe total resection, while preventing tumor seeding. Meanwhile, radiotherapeutic management alone for such a BM close to the brainstem is also challenging.
