Three genes, sigF, sigG and sigH, encoding group 3 sigma factors have been cloned and characterized in the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002. The sigF gene product was similar to sigma factors involved in general stress response and sporulation in other organisms, and the sigG and sigH gene products were similar to extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factors.

Proteic toxin-antitoxin (TA) loci were first identified in bacterial plasmids, and they were regarded as involved in stable plasmid maintenance by a so-called 'addiction' mechanism. Later, chromosomally encoded TA loci were identified and their function ascribed to survival mechanisms when bacteria were subjected to stress. In the search for chromosomally encoded TA loci in Gram-positive bacteria, we identified various in the pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The present study describes the cloning, isolation, and thorough biochemical characterization of UreE from Bacillus pasteurii, a novel protein putatively involved in the transport of Ni in the urease assembly process. A DNA fragment of the B. pasteurii urease operon, containing all four accessory genes (ureE, ureF, ureG, and ureD) required for the incorporation of Ni ions into the active site of urease, was cloned, sequenced, and analyzed.
