Background: Liver ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which is an inevitable clinical problem of liver resection, liver transplantation and haemorrhagic shock. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) was intimately coupled with multiple metabolic processes and proved to protect against apoptosis and inflammatory response in hepatocytes during hepatic I/R injury. However, the regulatory mechanisms of FGF21 in hepatic I/R injury remains unknown.

Background: Workload measurement is important to help determine optimal staffing and workload distribution for pathology laboratories. The Level 4 Equivalent (L4E) System is the most widely used Anatomical Pathology (AP) workload measurement tool in Canada. However, it was initially not developed with subspecialties in mind.

Although the priority is immediate recognition and initiation of treatment, long-term care planning is important to help reduce anxiety and promote healthy growth and development. Learning to recognize, manage, and stabilize the child is an essential part of improving the family dynamics.

This case describes an Asian woman with stable CHB presenting with significant hepatitis flare with markedly elevated serum aminotransferases and hepatitis B virus DNA level.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) plays an important role in liver metabolism and is also a potential marker for NAFL. Here we aimed to test the effect of FGF21 deficiency on liver pathology in mice consuming a conventional high fat, high sucrose (HFHS) obesogenic diet for up to 52 weeks.

The present study evaluated three ROFT devices (DrugWipe 6S, Ora-Check and SalivaScreen) on the detection of ketamine, opiates, methamphetamine, cannabis, cocaine and MDMA. A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS) assay was firstly established and validated for confirmation analysis of the six types of drugs and/or their metabolites.

Aims: Proprietary Chinese medicines (pCMs) and health products, generally believed to be natural and safe, are gaining popularity worldwide. However, the safety of pCMs and health products has been severely compromised by the practice of adulteration. The current study aimed to examine the problem of adulteration of pCMs and health products in Hong Kong.

Aortico-left ventricular tunnel was subsequently diagnosed on pathologic examination of the explant heart. Aortico-left ventricular tunnel is a rare congenital cardiac malformation and can remain undiagnosed if the clinician has a low level of suspicion.

Telomeres are specialized nucleoprotein structures that comprise the "end zone" of chromosomes. Besides having specialized sequences and structures, there are six resident proteins at telomeres that play prominent roles in protecting chromosome ends.

In nature, extracellular multi-enzyme complexes known as cellulosomes are among the most effective ways to transform cellulose to useable sugars. Cellulosomes consist of a diversity of secreted cellulases and other plant cell-wall degrading enzymes bound to a protein scaffold.

One of these anticancer barriers is the telomere, a specialized nucleoprotein complex that caps the ends of eukaryotic chromosome. Impaired telomere function activates the canonical DNA damage response pathway that engages p53 to initiate apoptosis or replicative senescence.

In both cases, the diagnosis was considered and pursued but would not be made utilizing Task Force Criteria. The diagnosis was made based on the morphology of a single beat during exercise testing.

With advancements in cytogenetic techniques, such as array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH), there is new hope for uncovering small chromosomal microdeletions or microduplications that may contribute to our understanding of Wilms tumor. We performed aCGH on 10 samples of Wilms tumor with normal conventional cytogenetic and chromosomal CGH findings.

Telomeric binding of POT1 is enhanced by its interaction with TPP1. In this study, we demonstrate that mouse Tpp1 confers telomere end protection by recruiting Pot1a and Pot1b to telomeres.

The anabolic effects of insulin are mediated by the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), an evolutionarily conserved kinase which is also a convergence point between nutrient sensing and cell growth. We postulated that mTOR signalling in the heart requires the metabolism of glucose.

Several other tumors enter the differential diagnosis, including malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor and undifferentiated sarcoma. Several recent reports utilizing expression array techniques have documented expression of the MYCN oncogene in synovial sarcoma.

All reported patients carry at least one copy of the common 1541G>A (E140K) mutation. Whereas patients with one copy of the E140K allele, in combination with a more deleterious mutation, follow a severe clinical course, patients homozygous for the E140K mutation have a delayed onset of disease and a more prolonged survival.

A heat shock at 42 degrees C maximized survival at the lethal temperature of 52 degrees C and a cold shock at 20 degrees C maximized survival after repeated freeze-thawing. Enhanced survival from heat shock was found to be strongly dependent on growth stage, with its greatest effect shortly after phase.

Here, we use a stringent experimental strategy to molecularly define the astrocyte lineage by integrating microarray datasets across several in vitro model systems of astrocyte differentiation, primary astrocyte cultures, and various astrocyterich CNS structures. The intersection of astrocyte data sets, coupled with the application of nonastrocytic exclusion filters, yielded many astrocyte-specific genes possessing strikingly varied patterns of regional CNS expression.

This paper evaluates the potential to detect evidence for microbial life by comparing laboratory studies of terrestrial microorganisms with measurements from the Galileo Near Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (NIMS). If the interior of Europa at one time harbored life, some evidence may remain in the surface materials.
