Background: Anti-ganglioside antibodies with a pathogenic potential are present in C. jejuni-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) patients and are probably induced by molecular mimicry. Immunization studies in rabbits and mice have demonstrated that these anti-ganglioside antibodies can be induced using purified lipo-oligosaccharides (LOS) from C.

We previously identified an immunogenic 32 kDa protein specifically present in newly excysted juveniles (NEJs) of Fasciola hepatica. Here we show by N-terminal protein sequencing that this protein represents a CL-like protease still containing the propeptide.

In commercial poultry husbandry, alternatives for the use of antibiotics and vaccines are under investigation, which preferably have to be applicable for both layer- and broiler-type chickens. There are indications that the defense mechanisms vary between layer- and broiler-type chickens. Therefore, the difference in immune response between layer- and broiler-type chickens of the same age was investigated, using TNP-KLH (trinitrophenyl-conjugated keyhole limpet hemocyanin) as antigen without adjuvant.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe intestinal microflora lives in intimate contact with its surrounding intestinal wall and the bacteria can exert beneficial or deleterious effects on the host, depending on whether they are classified as probiotics or as pathogens. The interaction is determined on one hand by characteristics of the microorganisms, and on the other hand by characteristics of the intestinal wall. Together they determine the health status of the intestine.
