Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the link between dry eye disease and various systemic health issues, focusing on how these affect quality of life (QOL) and health utility in 449 patients, mostly women and averaging 62 years old.
  • Results showed that about 49% of participants had systemic comorbidities, but there was no significant difference in QOL scores between those with and without comorbidities.
  • However, patients with dry eye disease who also had depression or insomnia exhibited worse eye health, underscoring the importance for ophthalmologists to consider overall health in managing dry eye disease.

Background: To determine whether quality of life (QOL) and health utility are affected to the same extent among dry eye (DE) patients with short tear film break-up time dry eye (TBUT-DE) with minimal clinical signs were as severe as aqueous-deficient dry eye (ADDE).

Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among DE patients who visited one of 10 eye clinics in Japan. Among the 463 registered patients, this study involved 449 patients with DE who were aged 20 years or older.

Introduction: Predictors for the effect of sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors at lowering hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients remain unclear. We therefore aimed to elucidate these predictors in type 2 diabetes patients after 3 months of SGLT2 treatment.

Methods: A total of 302 consecutive type 2 diabetes patients who had been treated with SGLT2 inhibitors as monotherapy or add-on therapy to existing antidiabetic treatments were enrolled retrospectively.

Both ulcerative colitis and Takayasu's arteritis are though to be organ-specific immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. We present the rare case of a 23-year-old woman with a 4-year history of ulcerative colitis who developed Takayasu's arteritis one month after giving birth. She was found to carry the human leukocyte antigens (HLA)-B52 and DR2, which were previously noted to be associated with these inflammatory conditions in the Japanese population.

Cyclic AMP (cAMP) output in the duodenal contents of 11 normal subjects, 18 patients with chronic pancreatitis, six convalescing from acute pancreatitis and five with pancreatic carcinoma was measured after a single dose of pancreozymin and secretin. The technic was indirect, utilizing recovery of duodenal contents by the Dreiling tube rather than direct measurements of fluid that was not contaminated by bile. In all patients groups, cAMP output reached a peak after this stimulation with a concomitant increase of bicarbonate and amylase outputs.
