  • In November 2021, the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in South Africa, leading the WHO to classify it as a variant of concern due to its rapid spread and ability to evade immunity.
  • Omicron has over 60 mutations and its sub-lineages (BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.3) exhibit additional changes, resulting in this variant causing less severe illness compared to Delta but still posing risks to the unvaccinated.
  • A debate is ongoing among scientists about Omicron's potential role as a natural vaccine, with some arguing that it might boost immunity similarly to live attenuated vaccines, while others warn of its significant health risks.

  • SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, emerged in December 2019, leading the WHO to declare a pandemic in March 2020 due to its rapid spread.
  • India launched its vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2 on January 13, 2021, administering two vaccines: Covaxin, made with inactivated viral particles, and Covishield, an adenovirus vector-based vaccine.
  • Covishield has shown around 90% effectiveness while Covaxin is about 80% effective; both have been effective against mutant variants, although Covaxin may provide broader protection if future variants alter the structure of the virus's spike protein.

Our first case is a forty-three-year-old nondiabetic, nonhypertensive female who was initially diagnosed with acute HEV induced viral hepatitis and subsequently developed acute onset ascending quadriparesis with lower motor neuron type of bilateral facial nerve palsies and respiratory failure. Second patient was a 14-year-old young male who presented with meningoencephalitis with acute onset symmetric flaccid paraparesis.
