A study has been made of 710 patients with proved gynaecological tuberculosis investigated between January 1, 1951 and March 31, 1985. The main presenting symptoms in order of frequency were infertility, pelvic pain, excessive menstrual loss and amenorrhoea. The average age was 31 years at first attendance, only 16% of married women had been pregnant and palpable adnexal masses were found in 47%.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that a lumbar pad producing extension of the lumbar spine is of value in posture support seats for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Our method was to establish whether or not an increase in lumbar lordosis produced any increase in resistance to static lateral curvature of the supine lumbar spine. Nine boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy were studied at an age when they were about to go into a wheelchair or had recently become wheelchair mobile.

This study investigates the effectiveness of spinal supports and seating systems in retarding the progress of spinal curvature in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The approach was to take six monthly radiographs of children with this disease attending the Regency Park Centre sitting in their wheelchairs with their usual spinal supports. Scoliosis progressed from a mean value of approximately 10 degrees for children under 12 years to a value of the order of 75 degrees by the age of 16 to 18 years.

An SEM analysis of the effects of tunicamycin, cytochalasin B, and colcemid has yielded insights into the process of compaction in the early mouse embryo. All three reagents block or reverse compaction and decrease the number of microvilli (MV), although some MV polarization is permitted. In addition, tunicamycin is shown to lessen cell adhesion even in compacted embryos.

Between 1st January, 1951 and 31st December, 1980, 704 women with proven tuberculosis of the genital tract were investigated. The previous obstetrical history, age incidence, presenting symptoms, and pelvic findings have been reviewed in 10-year periods. The incidence of previous pregnancies rose in successive periods and the average age increased.

A study was made of women with postmenopausal tuberculosis of the genital tract investigated between January 1, 1951, and March 1, 1981. Twenty-six of 701 patients (3.7%) with proved gynecologic tuberculosis had postmenopausal infection.

Thirty-eight cases of Legg-Perthes' disease treated by innominate osteotomy have been reviewed and compared with 33 cases, matched for age and severity, treated in recumbency in plaster hip spicas. The results were similar in the two groups, the radiologic results in the innominate osteotomy group being marginally worse. There was a high incidence of poor results in both groups in those over the age of eight years at the onset of symptoms, especially if femoral "head at risk" signs were present.

The conventional wheelchair sling seat provides little or no support to the spine of a child with myopathy or neurogenic muscular weakness. As the spinal muscles become weaker scoliosis may develop with associated deformity, pain and restriction of cardio-respiratory function. If muscle weakness is severe, the resultant fully developed deformity is virtually impossible to treat.

In order to distinguish between a maternal, fetal or maternal and fetal genetic predisposition towards severe pre-eclampsia, the first pregnancies of 158 mothers and 160 mothers-in-law of pre-eclamptic women and of matched controls were analysed. Fourteen per cent of mothers of pre-eclamptics were found to have had severe pre-eclampsia, confirming previous suggestions that the condition "runs in families', in contrast to only a 3% incidence amongst mothers of controls. The incidence in mothers-in-law of both pre-eclamptics and controls was 4%, in full agreement with a maternal genotype hypothesis and suggesting that the fetal genotype plays, at most, only a minor role in the aetiology of severe pre-eclampsia.

A study has been made of 91 women with proved tuberculosis of the genital tract treated by surgery between 1st January, 1951 and 15th October, 1979. In 77 the operation was performed during anti-tuberculosis drug therapy. In the remainder the diagnosis was made after operation and drug therapy was started as soon as possible thereafter.
