Introduction: Anthracyclines treat a myriad of malignancies; however, they are known to lead to cancer therapy-related cardiomyopathy (CTRC). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the role of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in primary prevention of CTRC have yielded mixed results.

Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Scopus databases was performed to identify RCTs that evaluated outcomes in patients receiving anthracyclines and ACEi or ARBs versus control.

Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is indicated for multiple pancreatic and biliary pathologies and carries a heightened risk profile compared with other endoscopic procedures. Considerable research has been directed towards discerning risk factors associated with complications such as post-ERCP pancreatitis and post-ERCP bleeding. Despite this, data on chronic liver disease (CLD) as a risk factor for complications is limited.

Obesity, a prevalent global health concern, is characterized by excessive fat accumulation, which confers significant nutritional and health risks, including a shortened lifespan and diminished wellbeing. Central to the regulation of energy balance and food intake is the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) protein, which modulates the interplay between caloric consumption and energy expenditure. Given its pivotal role in obesity regulation, the identification of effective inhibitors targeting the FTO protein is imperative for developing therapeutic interventions.

Since the discovery of caspases in 1993 (Yuan et al, 1993), they have largely been regarded as essential Cys proteases in apoptosis. However, more recently, it has become evident that caspases also have non-apoptotic functions in the so-called caspase-dependent non-lethal processes (CDPs) including cell proliferation and cell differentiation (Aram et al, 2017). While most of the non-apoptotic functions were characterized under normal developmental conditions, a new study by Galasso et al took this examination a step further-to the analysis of moderate stress conditions.

Auditory perceptual analysis (APA) is the main method for clinical assessment of speech-language deficits, which are one of the most prevalent childhood disabilities. However, results from APA are susceptible to intra- and inter-rater variabilities. There are also other limitations of manual or hand transcription-based speech disorder diagnostic methods.

Background: Pre-procedural fasting (nil per os [NPO]) is a commonly implemented protocol to prevent aspiration during certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. However, evidence suggests aspiration risk is quite low. Current guidelines support a reduced fasting duration before procedures necessitating anesthesia or sedation, but many health systems persist in the use of NPO past midnight.

Article Synopsis
  • Thoracic radiation increases the risk of accelerated coronary artery disease, leading to concerns about outcomes for patients who undergo revascularization after such treatment.
  • A meta-analysis of four studies involving nearly 14,000 patients revealed a significant increase in all-cause mortality for patients with prior thoracic radiation during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but no significant differences were found for cardiac mortality, myocardial infarction, or restenosis.
  • The findings suggest that the higher mortality risk in these patients may be more related to their underlying cancer than the effects of the revascularization procedure itself.

Background: Large bore access procedures rely on vascular closure devices to minimize access site complications. Suture-based vascular closure devices (S-VCD) such as ProGlide and ProStar XL have been readily used, but recently, newer generation collagen-based vascular closure devices (C-VCD) such as MANTA have been introduced. Data on comparisons of these devices are limited.

Label-free biosensors are plagued by the issue of non-specific protein binding which negatively affects sensing parameters such as sensitivity, selectivity, and limit-of-detection. In the current work, we explore the possibility of using the Rayleigh waves in ST-Quartz devices to efficiently remove non-specifically bound proteins via acoustic streaming. A coupled-field finite element (FE) fluid structure interaction (FSI) model of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device based on ST-Quartz substrate in contact with a liquid loading was first used to predict trends in forces related to SAW-induced acoustic streaming.

Anti-M-type phospholipase A receptor (anti-PLAR) antibody is believed to be associated with primary membranous nephropathy (pMN) and absent in secondary MN (sMN). There are few data regarding utility of anti-PLAR antibody as a prognosticator. Our study aimed to compare the incidence of positive serum anti-PLAR antibody titer in pMN versus sMN and correlation with clinical outcome.

Neurodevelopment requires precise regulation of gene expression, including post-transcriptional regulatory events such as alternative splicing and mRNA translation. However, translational regulation of specific isoforms during neurodevelopment and the mechanisms behind it remain unknown. Using RNA-seq analysis of mouse neocortical polysomes, here we report translationally repressed and derepressed mRNA isoforms during neocortical neurogenesis whose orthologs include risk genes for neurodevelopmental disorders.
