Introduction: Different protocols and procedures for sinus lift and implant placement are available, generally involving the use of grafts to increase the tissue volume and/or prevent the Schneiderian membrane from collapsing. Among xenografts, deproteinised bovine bone graft (DBBP) is frequently used in sinus lift procedures. Leaving an ungrafted space following membrane elevation has proven to have a bony regenerative potential as well.

Background: This prospective observational study investigated the determinants of malignant transformation (MT) in localized oral leukoplakia (OL) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL).

Methods: Demographic, clinical, histological, and DNA ploidy status data were collected at enrolment. Survival analysis was performed (MT being the event of interest).

Objectives: Oral lichen planus with exclusive keratotic reticular, papular, and/or plaque-like lesions (K-OLP) is a clinical pattern of OLP that may be associated with a complex symptomatology and psychological alteration. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety (A) and depression (D) in patients with K-OLP, analyzing the potential predictors which can affect mental health status.

Methods: Three hundred K-OLP patients versus 300 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in 15 Italian universities.

PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS), is a spectrum of disorders caused by mutations of PTEN, in which non-cancerous growths, called hamartomas, develop in different areas of the body, often including the oral mucosa. PHTS also implies a recognized increased risk of malignancies, as PTEN is a tumor suppressor gene capable of inhibiting progression of several cancers. One of the main and most common clinical manifestation of PHTS are gingival overgrowths presenting as warty lumps.

The management of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) including oral leukoplakia (OL) is not currently structured according to agreed guidelines. The current report presents survey data gathered from Oral Medicine Practitioners (OMPs) in Europe and Australia and is aimed to investigate attitudes and practice in the diagnosis, risk stratification and treatment of OL. In the presence of a clinical provisional diagnosis of OL, respondents reported always undertaking biopsy in 83% of cases, with most OMPs also relying on diagnostic adjuncts.

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory chronic disease of the oral mucosa, with different patterns of clinical manifestations which range from keratotic manifestations (K-OLP) to predominantly non-keratotic lesions (nK-OLP). The aim of the study was to analyze the differences in the clinical, psychological profile and symptoms between Italian patients of the North and Central-South with K-OLP and nK-OLP.

Methods: 270 K-OLP and 270 nK-OLP patients were recruited in 15 Italian universities.

Background: The wellbeing of oral lichen planus patients (OLPs) may be strongly influenced by a poor quality of sleep (QoS) and psychological impairment. The aims were to analyze the prevalence of sleep disturbance, anxiety, and depression in OLPs and to validate the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in OLPs.

Methods: Three hundred keratotic OLPs (K-OLPs), 300 with predominant non-keratotic OLP (nK-OLPs), and 300 controls were recruited in 15 Italian universities.

Oral Medicine is a young dental specialty born almost a century ago and deals with orofacial conditions not directly attributable to the most prevalent tooth pathologies such as dental caries or periodontal diseases. Presentations may reflect local disease or orofacial manifestations of more widespread pathology affecting other parts of the body. Due to its recency as a distinct discipline and to heterogeneous global settings, Oral Medicine has not yet achieved a shared scope and definition, as well as a recognized status across the globe.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often go undetected in toddlers. The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) was used to screen 3,793 children aged 16-30 months from low- and high-risk sources; screen positive cases were diagnostically evaluated. Rescreening was performed on 1,416 children aged 42-54 months.

A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is usually taken to be permanent. In this study, 13 two-year-old children with ASD lost the diagnosis by age 4, at which time they scored within the normal range on standardized measures of cognitive and adaptive functioning. No differences were found in symptom severity, socialization, or communication between children who lost the ASD diagnosis and children who did not, but children with PDD-NOS were significantly more likely than those with full autistic disorder to move off the spectrum.

Objectives: To report the development of a novel, simple-to-use method for laparoscopic deployment of fine-quality saline ice slush by way of a 10-mm end-effector for laparoscopic parenchymal hypothermia.

Methods: A mechanism for making fine ice slush was created, and a 10-mm laparoscopic end-effector was designed and constructed for deployment of the ice slush. The novel ice slush deployment system was tested in a porcine model and compared with that of standard open ice slush cooling.

Background: The role of the Autonomous Nervous System in the immunologic and inflammatory response is still an issue of discussion. Furthermore, the physiopathologic mechanisms involved are still unknown. Acute pancreatitis (AP) does not escape this disconcert.

Children with craniofacial anomalies often have compromise of the upper airway, a condition with potential for morbidity and mortality. In children with microretrognathia, the diminutive size and retruded position of the mandible reduces the size of the oropharynx, thereby predisposing to glossoptosis and airway obstruction. Although several authors have reported successful use of mandibular distraction osteogenesis to alleviate this type of upper airway obstruction, the physiologic relationship between changes in mandibular shape, size, and position and upper airway dynamics remains undefined.

An in vitro test system was developed to examine the effects of red blood cells (RBC) on shear-induced platelet adhesion (SIPAD) and platelet aggregation (SIPAG). Suspensions of human platelets labeled with Mepacrine and suspended in citrated plasma were exposed to single, continuous or repetitive (120-300x) one second shear stress pulses of varying amplitude (15-100 dyn/cm2) in a cone-plate viscometer in the presence or absence of fresh, untreated (intact) RBC or glutaraldehyde (GLA)-fixed, rigid, adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-depleted (GLA)-RBC. SIPAG was expressed as percent loss of single platelets.

The rate of progression of chronic renal failure (CRF) is similar for many diseases, suggesting a common, perhaps intrinsic, renal signal for its progression. The remnant nephron hypothesis of Bricker suggests that CRF may be the result of persistent compensatory renal growth (CRG). Normally, CRG after unilateral nephrectomy (uniNx) ceases within 1 week.

Background: Pentoxifylline has been reported to increase radiation sensitivity in vivo. We sought to evaluate whether this effect is mediated by changes in murine erythrocyte flexibility.

Methods: Pentoxifylline was administered via liquid or solid diet to young adult male CF-1 mice for 1-6 weeks.
