Background: The aim of this study was to elucidate a curable subgroup among patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who developed postoperative recurrence.
Patients And Methods: Between 1986 and 2012, among the 1408 patients who underwent complete anatomic lung resection for NSCLC at our institution, 420 developed recurrence. After excluding 14 patients with insufficient information about recurrence, 406 were included in this retrospective study.
Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is a standard treatment for stage II/III esophageal cancer. Preoperative chemotherapy is also considered a standard treatment for stage II/III esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in patients who undergo radical lymph node dissection. We conducted a feasibility study of preoperative CRT with cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil (CF) and elective lymph node irradiation followed by esophagectomy with radical lymph node dissection in patients with stage II/III ESCC.

This study evaluated the effects and side effects of (125)I low-dose-rate brachytherapy for patients with postradiation local failure.
Patients And Methods: 15 patients who received salvage brachytherapy were analyzed.
We evaluated the long-term outcome of very dose-intensive chemotherapy (TCC-NHL-91) for advanced intermediate-grade lymphoma, in which an eight-cycle regimen with 11 drugs was given with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) support (total 18 weeks). Fifty-nine patients were treated during February 1, 1991 and March 31, 2001 (median age: 48 years). Forty-three patients (73%) were in a high-intermediate risk or high-risk group (HI/H) according to the age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (aa-IPI).

We retrospectively investigated 112 patients with stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC who underwent complete resection of the lung tumor in our institution from 1986 through 2003. Among the 91 patients determined suitable candidates for PORT postoperatively, 45 patients received PORT (PORT group) and 46 did not (non-PORT group).

Ten responders were obtained 5 CR and 5 PR), and heavily treated patients were included in the responders. The median duration of over all survival which was estimated with Kaplan-Meier curve was 11.

GCTs of bone usually have the characteristics of local recurrence and a low potential for distant metastasis. The patient was a 37-year-old man with an unresectable large tumor of the mediastinum.

Background/purpose: It is unlikely that adjuvant chemoradiotherapy applied to the pancreatic bed alone significantly improves the survival of patients with resectable pancreatic cancer. The aim of the present study was to determine whether prophylactic hepatic irradiation (PHI) improved patient outcome after the curative resection of pancreatic cancer.
Methods: The study population was comprised of 34 patients (PHI group) who were administered PHI after curative resection of pancreatic cancer between September 1994 and December 2003.
Purpose: A questionnaire survey was performed to evaluate the complications and prognosis of esophageal cancer treated with esophageal intubation before or during radiotherapy.
Methods And Materials: Clinical data were accumulated on a total of 47 patients treated at 17 institutions in Japan. Five patients had Stage II, 30 Stage III, and 11 Stage IV, and the stage was unknown in 1 patient.
Recently, a combination of local irradiation and chemotherapy has been suggested as a standardized treatment for localized lymphoma. However, it has been difficult to establish a standard treatment for localized primary breast lymphoma simply because of its rarity. We report two cases of primary breast lymphoma successfully treated with a combination therapy including local radiation therapy.
