Bats harbor several highly pathogenic zoonotic viruses including Rabies, Marburg, and henipaviruses, without overt clinical symptoms in the animals. It has been suspected that bats might have evolved particularly effective mechanisms to suppress viral replication. Here, we investigated interferon (IFN) response, -induction, -secretion and -signaling in epithelial-like cells of the relevant and abundant African fruit bat species, Eidolon helvum (E.

Melanoma patients in stage III have a considerable recurrence rate. The 10-year survival in this stage depends on the number and size of affected nodes. Currently, there is no optimal serum marker for early detection of relapse available.

Death-associated protein kinase (DAPK) has pro-apoptotic functions and participates in various apoptotic systems. DAPK acts as a tumor suppressor, and its inactivation by promoter hypermethylation has been frequently observed in various human cancers. As alterations of pro-apoptotic genes might cause instability in the balance of cell-turnover during chronic inflammatory processes, epigenetic silencing of DAPK might be involved in the carcinogenesis of ulcerative colitis-associated carcinoma (UCC).

In the follow-up of melanoma patients, there is still a need for an optimal serum marker to discover recurrent disease at an early stage. Melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) has been investigated as a serum marker for cutaneous melanomas. Although the prognosis for melanoma based on stage is generally good, the disease identified at later stages is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality.
