Objectives: Extended septal myectomy and alcohol septal ablation are 2 invasive treatments for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Our goal was to compare which of these techniques achieved a higher reduction in gradients, improvement in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class and reduction in medical treatment.

Methods: It is a single-centre observational and retrospective analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • There is limited understanding of how gender affects the clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes of patients experiencing cardiogenic shock (CS), particularly in a hospital setting.
  • The study aimed to explore gender-related differences in characteristics, management, and in-hospital mortality among CS patients, while also evaluating the prognostic accuracy of the SCAI classification for predicting mortality by sex.
  • An analysis of 163 CS patients showed that women were less likely to smoke and had lower rates of certain conditions compared to men, but in-hospital survival rates were similar across genders, indicating no significant differences in outcomes.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to analyse early- and long-term outcomes of aortic valve reimplantation (David operation) in patients with heritable thoracic aortic disease.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational analysis using data from a prospectively maintained surgical database from March 2004 to April 2021. Patients with heritable thoracic aortic disease were included in the study.

Objectives: Our goal was to define characteristic patterns of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose in non-infected patients with ascending aortic prosthetic grafts during the first year after surgery.

Methods: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) was performed at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively in 26 uninfected patients. Clinical, analytical and microbiological (blood culture) assessments were performed to confirm the absence of infection.

Heart transplantation from controlled donation after the circulatory determination of death (cDCDD) may help to increase the availability of hearts for transplantation. During 2020, four heart transplants were performed at three different Spanish hospitals based on the use of thoraco-abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (TA-NRP) followed by cold storage (CS). All donors were young adults <45 years.

Article Synopsis
  • Controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) is an emerging method to expand the organ donor pool, with new techniques allowing heart transplants from cDCD donors to become viable.
  • A case in Spain involved a 43-year-old female donor whose heart was successfully procured using thoraco-abdominal normothermic regional perfusion, contrasting with traditional methods that required ex-situ devices.
  • This case demonstrates the potential for effective heart transplantation from cDCD donors while also paving the way for increased multiorgan donation opportunities.
