Dental instrumentation with hand-held devices is associated with discomfort, fatigue and musculoskeletal diseases or repetitive stress injuries. The goal of this in vivo study was to determine the effect of an ergonomic handle sheath on muscle work, comfort and fatigue associated with (a) piezoelectric scaling by hygienists with and without musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and (b) dental cavity preparation by healthy dentists using a dental micromotor. Two groups of ten hygienists each tested the piezoelectric scaler.

(1) Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), discomfort, fatigue, pain, and other acute and chronic work-related injuries are common among dental clinicians. Hand instruments constitute a primary risk factor for these conditions. The overall goal of this study was to compare in dental hygienists with healthy hands, and in those with MSDs, the effect of three different handle designs on instrumentation-related muscle work, comfort, fatigue, and quality of tactile feedback.

Young Latinas face multiple health challenges that place them at high risk for chronic diseases. Digital health promotion interventions can offer education and support to activate self-care and preventive behaviors. This pilot study evaluated a brief, theory-informed, culturally tailored intervention, Examen Tu Salud, that provided daily text and multimedia messages and weekly peer coaching via videoconference to improve health behaviors among young adult Latina women.

Late detection and specialist referral result in poor oral cancer outcomes globally. High-risk LRMU populations usually do not have access to oral medicine specialists, a specialty of dentistry, whose expertise includes the identification, treatment, and management of oral cancers. To overcome this access barrier, there is an urgent need for novel, low-cost tele-health approaches to expand specialist access to low-resource, remote and underserved individuals.

Background: Gingivitis is a nonspecific inflammatory lesion in response to the accumulation of oral biofilm and is a necessary precursor to periodontitis. Enhanced oral hygiene practices are necessary to reverse gingivitis and a dentifrice that could provide significant clinical reductions in plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation would be desirable to treat gingivitis and potentially prevent progression to periodontitis. This clinical study aimed to investigate the effect of a novel stannous fluoride-containing dentifrice with 2.

Background: The activity of the amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in the tight epithelia of the lung is regulated by proteolytic activation and ubiquitination. Pathophysiology of lung diseases is directly related to changes in one or both of these mechanisms.

Methods: In this study, we investigated the impact of ubiquitination and cathepsin-mediated proteolytic activation mechanisms on the functional regulation of ENaC in lung cancer A549 cells using the patch-clamp technique.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a significant cause of late-onset epilepsy and has a considerable impact on patients' quality of life, which was assessed using the QOLIE-31 questionnaire in this study.* -
  • The study involved 155 Peruvian patients with epilepsy due to NCC, revealing that 76.8% had poor quality of life scores, particularly linked to the frequency of generalized seizures and lower education levels.* -
  • Multivariate analysis indicated that a higher number of generalized epileptic seizures was significantly associated with worse quality of life, underscoring the need for addressing seizure frequency in NCC patients.*

Most blood components for transfusions are irradiated ex vivo to prevent transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GvHD); this irradiation can potentially affect the cytogenetic dose assessment of patients showing acute radiation syndrome (ARS) with bone marrow suppression or acute anaemia. Whole blood samples from five donors were irradiated with 0, 10 or 25 Gy γ-rays. The mitotic activity of each cultured blood sample was measured by calculating the mitotic index.

Subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a form of NCC with cysticerci located in the subarachnoid space. This form of NCC can cause general and focal neurologic symptoms, and sometimes requires surgical intervention as a treatment. In this report, we present a rare case of hemifacial spasm secondary to arachnoiditis because of an NCC cyst in the cerebellopontine angle.

Capsaicin is a naturally occurring alkaloid derived from Chili peppers fruits. Using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique in Xenopus oocyte expression system, actions of capsaicin on the functional properties of α subunit of the human nicotinic acetylcholine (α nACh) receptor were investigated. Ion currents activated by ACh (100 μM) were reversibly inhibited with an IC value of 8.

The pig is the natural intermediate host of , a parasite causing significant burden of disease in both humans and pigs. Porcine cysticercosis is traditionally detected via tongue palpation and slaughterhouse meat inspection, both with limited sensitivity. Serum antibody detection has a better performance; however, it does not discriminate past from present infection.

Hypermetabolic and catabolic states in large TBSA burns lead to higher basal body temperature and tachycardia. These metabolic changes complicate the diagnosis of bacteremia and sepsis. Current indications for obtaining blood cultures (BCs) in this population are poorly described and nonstandardized.

We hypothesize that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may be effective in preventing the changes in total and regional body composition and increases in interleukin (IL) 6 that occur as a result of hypogonadism. Male guinea pigs (n = 40, 70- to 72-week retired breeders) were block randomized by weight into 4 groups: (1) sham surgery (SHAM)/control (CTRL) diet, (2) SHAM/conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) diet (1%), (3) orchidectomy (ORX)/CTRL diet, and (4) ORX/CLA diet. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans were performed at baseline and week 16 to assess body composition.

Article Synopsis
  • Medicinal leech therapy is often used to treat venous congestion after surgeries like tissue transfers but can lead to rare complications, such as leeches migrating beneath surgical structures.
  • In a case involving a rectus abdominus free flap after a significant skull surgery, leech therapy was needed due to flap congestion, prompting a return to the operating room.
  • Duplex ultrasound proved effective in locating the leech 12 cm away from its bite site, allowing for successful removal with minimal incision, showcasing its reliability in such uncommon situations.

Purpose: To compare the astigmatic changes induced by spherical and elliptical excimer laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting: University-based refractive surgery practice.

Methods: Three-month refractive data from 317 eyes of consecutive patients having spherical PRK, astigmatic PRK (A-PRK), spherical LASIK, and astigmatic LASIK (A-LASIK) by a single surgeon (J.

Purpose: To determine factors affecting refractive and visual outcomes in patients treated with astigmatic and spherical photorefractive keratectomy (A-PRK and PRK) and laser in situ keratomileusis (A-LASIK and LASIK).

Setting: University referral refractive surgery clinic.

Methods: Refractive and visual acuity results in 619 eyes of 388 consecutive patients having refractive surgery over a 2-year period by a single surgeon were retrospectively analyzed.
