Phylogenetic analysis of genomic data allows insights into the evolutionary history of pathogens, especially the events leading to host switching and diversification, as well as alterations of the life cycle (life-history traits). Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of malaria parasite species exploit squamate reptiles, birds, and mammals as vertebrate hosts as well as many genera of dipteran vectors, but the evolutionary and ecological events that led to this diversification and success remain unresolved. For a century, systematic parasitologists classified malaria parasites into genera based on morphology, life cycle, and vertebrate and insect host taxa.

Background: Evaluation of androgen receptor (AR) and cytokeratin 20 (CK20) expression can aid in distinguishing between conventional basal cell carcinoma (characteristically AR+, CK20-) and trichoepithelioma (frequently AR-, CK20+). Within these two groups of tumors, morpheaform/infiltrative basal cell carcinoma (mBCC) and desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) are particularly challenging to differentiate both clinically and histologically. We investigated whether AR and CK20 immunostains may distinguish between mBCC and DTE.

The prevalence of obesity, an established risk factor for several chronic diseases, including cancer, has risen dramatically over the past 4 decades. Dietary change and/or increased physical activity are the most commonly recommended lifestyle-based strategies for preventing or reversing obesity. One of several physiological systems that may be enhanced by dietary change and exercise is the immune system.

This study estimates the prevalence of depressed mood in caregivers of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and assesses whether demographics, stressors, intrapsychic strain, and gain are associated with depressed mood. A secondary analysis of baseline data from the Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study MCI trial was conducted using a cross-sectional, correlational design. Descriptive statistics to estimate the prevalence of caregiver depressed mood and univariate and block-wise logistic regression analyses were used.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among US women; there is therefore great interest in developing preventive and treatment strategies for this disease. Because breast cancer incidence is much lower in countries where women consume high levels of soy, bioactive compounds in this food source have been studied for their effects on breast cancer. Genistein, found at high levels in soybeans and soy foods, is a controversial candidate breast cancer preventive phytochemical whose effects on breast cells are complex.

Background: Metastatic testicular tumors that have not been successfully treated by means of initial chemotherapy are potentially curable with salvage chemotherapy.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 184 consecutive patients with metastatic testicular cancer that had progressed after they received cisplatin-containing combination chemotherapy. We gave 173 patients two consecutive courses of high-dose chemotherapy consisting of 700 mg of carboplatin per square meter of body-surface area and 750 mg of etoposide per square meter, each for 3 consecutive days, and each followed by an infusion of autologous peripheral-blood hematopoietic stem cells; the other 11 patients received a single course of this treatment.

Ecological niche models (ENMs) provide a means of characterizing the spatial distribution of suitable conditions for species, and have recently been applied to the challenge of locating potential distributional areas at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) when unfavorable climate conditions led to range contractions and fragmentation. Here, we compare and contrast ENM-based reconstructions of LGM refugial locations with those resulting from the more traditional molecular genetic and phylogeographic predictions. We examined 20 North American terrestrial vertebrate species from different regions and with different range sizes for which refugia have been identified based on phylogeographic analyses, using ENM tools to make parallel predictions.

The imbalance in systemic mediators of inflammation, such as leptin, is thought to be involved in obesity-associated cancers. In addition, systemic endocrine signals can influence the local autocrine/paracrine factors produced within this microenvironment to influence epithelial cell fate. We previously demonstrated that leptin preferentially promotes the survival and proliferation of colon epithelial cells possessing an Apc mutation (IMCE) but not model normal cells (YAMC).

The purpose of this study was to compare teachers' ratings of academic performance over 24 months between children with new-onset seizures (N=121) and those with new-onset asthma (N=54) aged 4 to 14. At each data collection point (baseline, 12 months, 24 months), children with seizures were placed into two groups according to their recurrent seizure status (yes/no) during that period. Longitudinal linear mixed models were used to explore differences between the asthma group and the two seizure groups and to determine if differences in teachers' ratings of performance in children with seizures were associated with age, gender, or use of medication.

The molecular mechanism underlying the actions of estrogens in normal prostate physiology and prostate cancer development remains unclear. In the present study we tested the hypothesis that estrogens modulate androgen-dependent events in prostate cells by examining the effects of 17beta-estradiol (E2) on androgen-responsive genes (ARGs) in the androgenresponsive LNCaP cells. We found that LNCaP cells express estrogen receptor-beta (ER-beta) as the major form of ER and ER treatment with E2 led to an increase in cell growth.

A model of children's attitudes toward their epilepsy was tested in 173 children (9-14 years) with epilepsy and their parents. Predictor variables tested were child characteristics, family mastery, child worry, child self-efficacy for seizure management, child psychosocial care needs, and seizure variables. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling, leading to a revised model in which less child worry, greater family mastery, and greater child seizure self-efficacy were directly related to more child positive attitudes.
