Efficacy and safety of a single-use dual blade goniotomy: 18-month results.

Purpose: To compare the 18-month efficacy and safety of Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy (KDB) in combination with cataract surgery (combined group) or as a standalone procedure (standalone group).

Setting: Single surgeon practice.

Design: Retrospective review study.

Human Versus Machine: Comparing a Deep Learning Algorithm to Human Gradings for Detecting Glaucoma on Fundus Photographs.

Purpose: To compare the diagnostic performance of human gradings vs predictions provided by a machine-to-machine (M2M) deep learning (DL) algorithm trained to quantify retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) damage on fundus photographs.

Design: Evaluation of a machine learning algorithm.

Methods: An M2M DL algorithm trained with RNFL thickness parameters from spectral-domain optical coherence tomography was applied to a subset of 490 fundus photos of 490 eyes of 370 subjects graded by 2 glaucoma specialists for the probability of glaucomatous optical neuropathy (GON), and estimates of cup-to-disc (C/D) ratios.

Anterior infectious necrotizing scleritis secondary to infection following intravitreal ranibizumab injection.

Purpose: To report the occurrence and management of severe infectious scleritis in a 75 year-old woman following intravitreal ranibizumab injection.

Observations: A 75 year-old monocular woman receiving monthly intravitreal ranibizumab injection for wet age related macular degeneration in the left eye presented with severe dull pain, decreased vision, and scleral melt with discharge 2 weeks after her last injection. The dilated fundus exam was devoid of vitritis.

Long-term effects of 4 popular diets on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

Background: We conducted a systematic review to examine the efficacy of the Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers (WW), and Zone diets, with a particular focus on sustained weight loss at ≥12 months.

Methods And Results: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library of Clinical Trials to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English with follow-up ≥4 weeks that examined the effects of these 4 popular diets on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors. We identified 12 RCTs (n=2559) with follow-up ≥12 months: 10 versus usual care (5 Atkins, 4 WW, and 1 South Beach) and 2 head-to-head (1 of Atkins, WW, and Zone, and 1 of Atkins, Zone, and control).

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus complicated by ipsilateral isolated Bell's palsy: a case report and review of the literature.

The objective of this study was to present a unique case of unilateral facial nerve palsy as an isolated complication of herpes zoster ophthalmicus. An 82-year-old immunocompetent male presented with a 1-week history of painful left scalp lesions. The diagnosis of left herpes zoster ophthalmicus with associated keratoconjunctivitis was established.
