Purpose: Local recurrence and distant failure after adjuvant radiation therapy for breast cancer remain significant clinical problems, incompletely predicted by conventional clinicopathologic markers. We had previously identified microRNA-139-5p and microRNA-1274a as key regulators of breast cancer radiation response in vitro. The purpose of this study was to investigate standard clinicopathologic markers of local recurrence in a contemporary series and to establish whether putative target genes of microRNAs involved in DNA repair and cell cycle control could better predict radiation therapy response in vivo.

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is a rare cutaneous reaction occurring within a previously irradiated field, precipitated by certain drugs. We report a case of RRD occurring after pre-sensitization with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in a woman with Stage IV breast cancer. The RRD occurred in one of the patient's four previous radiotherapy fields.

An 80-year-old woman with multifocal invasive lobular carcinoma of the right breast treated 6 years previously with mastectomy, locoregional radiotherapy, and tamoxifen was referred for a bone scan to investigate generalized arthralgias. The patient reported right-sided headaches, blurred vision, and dizziness in the previous 3 months. The bone scan revealed a large area of unusual and abnormal Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP) uptake in the right frontoparietal skull region.

Microbial communities were characterized at contaminated sites that had elevated levels of nitrate, nickel, aluminum, and uranium (up to 690 mM, 310 microM, 42 mM, and 30 microM, respectively). The bacterial community structure based upon clonal libraries of the SSU rRNA genes (screened clones = 876) was diverse at the background site, but the three acidic samples had decreased diversity and the majority of clones were closely related to Azoarcus and Pseudomonas species. Arthrobacter and Novosphingobium sequences were recovered from the background samples but not the acidic sites, and similar pseudomonad populations were present at the background and acidic sites albeit at different relative abundances.

Bone marrow transplant nephropathy (BMTN) classically presents more than 100 days after transplantation as an acute nephritis with hypertension, azotaemia and anemia that usually results in end stage renal failure (ESRF). The risk of developing BMTN may be greater with the use of more intensive chemotherapy and higher total body and tumor bed irradiation. Cis-retinoic acid (RA) may further increase the risk of developing BMTN.
